  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: K-FLECT lighting System

Has any one recieved the beam yet?

Not only have I not yet received the beam, but I have not received *anything*. I was informed in December that my order (minus the beam) was ready to ship, so I sent money. Since then, after some prodding, I received an apology and a promise of shipment within two weeks. But that deadline has come and gone, and more than a week later (and more prodding), no news about when to expect shipment. Customer service could be better...

Michael,

Thanks for mentioning this here. I have sent them an e-mail. I agree, not good.

Is the group buy still available? And, if so, where is the link to what's actually available and the prices?

Thanks.

Stephen

The group buy is closed.

I started this group buy before I was a mod and also before there was clarification of all the rules.

I don't plan on doing any more group buys myself, but I think there is a second group buy in the works.

We just recieved the beam. We didn't mount it yet to a Joker 800 but used the pannel in a course I gave at the fillm scool in Lausanne (Switzerland).

It was great using them. Mainly the 50x50cm.

Are these outstanding orders still left from the August GB?

My shipment finally cleared customs and was delivered today. Apparently I bought too much stuff, which is why it all took so long to assemble, ship, clear customs, and finally, get delivered. Anybody else go big?

Wow Michael. I sure wide I could have got that Joker Reflector!

Please PM me if anyone is not using their kits, and interested in selling.

Thank you.

Hey guys,

Is there anyone in LA who'd be interested in letting me rent their K Flect system for a small evening shoot in Los Angeles next week on 2/6/16?

PM me if you'd at least consider it. We can have a no obligation chat.

Best,

Blieden

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to give you a heads up that this system is on full display in a studio in Milano for the next couple of days before they head down to Roma. I think I am heading up there tomorrow.
You should drop by if you have a chance.

Panatronics
Via Bruno Maderna, 7
Milano

FYI Panatronics is an official reseller of Raven and Scarlett W in Italy.

A reminder, every shot you see here below is lit with ONE (yes that is correct) ONE light.

This has to have been the quietest post-GB ever. Very few posts of the gear in action and pretty minimal reviews. I kind of wonder what happened here. Maybe all the satisfied users are too busy to post but it's hard to tell. I like the concept but there is way too little info on-line.

Mine hasn't been working if anybody is interested.
(3) sizes, a bit of a cross section of reflectors and holders.

I bought a large kit and have mostly used the larger stuff within the kit that I bought. Here's a video of Kimiko Ishizaka playing Chopin on a 19th century Pleyel Piano that Chopin himself once played:

I used a single Joker Bug 800 in the Kflect beamer, two 100cm x 100cm reflectors (rim light and fill) and a 30cm x 30cm reflector (for key). It's wonderful to be able to use just a single light in a recording studio environment (less convection, less noise on circuits, etc). But it's also a challenge. Moving a single light is hard enough, because you not only move the source, but the shadows cast by the source. In the reflector world, the range of motion is smaller, and when you hit the limit of the range, changes can cascade through the system.

Nevertheless, I think it's a well-conceived system, and I prefer using reflectors to soft boxes most times.

Great example Michael.

I have two films coming up where I will be using this system and I will try to post some concrete examples with diagrams when I do.

Part of the problem, and I am just speculating, is that most lighting that is taught is three point lighting (key back fill) and people automatically think they need three (at least 2) to accomplish this.

You have to look at K-Flect system as if you are walking into a room with a a single shaft of light which you have to shape to create the lighting you want.

It's all about multipplying a single source of light instead of thinking interms of baks of lights.

In a way you have to "unlearn" lighting when you start using the system because you place the source toward where you want to reflect from as opposed to where you want to point it (at the subject).

In reflective lighting it is all about turning a single source into multiple kinds of light (because each reflective surface emulates a style of light) Soft, hard, direct, diffuse, narrow, wide, etc.

IN the end the color of panel becomes the source, BLUE is a spot, ORAGNE is a soft fill, YELLOW is a slightly wider dispersion. So you just move the panels to suit the mood.

It's a very creative exercise and makes relighting VERY fast.
