Greetings Red Users!

I have spent many months researching and testing various LED chips looking for one that has these qualities:
  • High CRI
  • High output from a single chip (100+ watt power draw, 750+ watt incandescent equivalent)
  • Daylight color balanced
The Cree CXA3590 chip fits the bill:
  • CRI typical = 95
  • Up to 150W power draw
  • 5700k color balance

Datasheet

Model Number
CXA3590-0000-000N0UAD57F

Unfortunately these chips are not readily available unless you want to buy 50+ units from most dealers. I pretty much gave up on trying to acquire one until I found a dealer who can get us these chips! Milad from LEDGroupBuy.com has been kind enough to source these chips and make them available to us.

I was able to buy a sample chip and put it through its paces. Of all daylight chips I have tested so far, this model has been the nicest. The color rendition is very similar to that of my studio strobes (Einsten E640).

The group buy is for the LED chip only. This is not a turn key solution to building a light fixture.

You will also need:
  • Heat sink. I'm using a unit from Cooliance.
  • Power supply. I have the 42V version of this:
http://www.meanwell.com/search/HLG-120H/default.htm
  • Thermal compound for use between the chip and the heat sink. I use Fujipoly thermal pads.
  • Soldering skills or a chip holder. I'm using the Ideal Chip-LOK 50-23

Regular price for the CXA3590 when in stock is $103.75 (some dealers charge even more)

Group buy price 10+ units = $84

Note that this is more than a price discount as most places require a minimum order of 20-50 chips.

Availability is about 4 weeks from the manufacturer. The group buy closes February 28th.

Respond with how many chips you would like and I will add you to the list.

More sample images coming...

(Milad has said that if there is enough interest there may be the option of adding power supplies to make a package)

*** I paid $103.75 for the sample chip. I am not getting any special deals beyond what is offered to all Red Users nor am I affiliated with the dealer or Cree in any way.

This post contains attachments. For me they are best viewed by saving to my computer. I'm having trouble with them looking correct in the browser.

First image = Simple skin tone shot. White balance and Rec709 lut applied.

I want to put together some samples images for people to evaluate. What are people most interested in? I'm assuming skin tones?

I haven't been able to build a proper fixture yet. The one in my original post was put together quickly during an afternoon so that I could evaluate the chip.

Yeah I'm totally down for some high power chips! The more power, the better! I'd be down for both tungsten (if available) and daylight! As it being flicker free that would depend on power supply, controller? Can they be capable of dimming?

Cree makes warmer chips but this group buy is for the 5700k model only. If there is enough interest then another chip could also become available. From what I understand Cree doesn't sell in small quantities.

The power supply I have controls the brightness by adjusting the current output. I'm assuming that this is flicker free but I don't have a good way to test it as I don't have a high FPS camera. If somebody with a Dragon or such wants to meet up then I'd be happy to.

I'm sure there are many power supply options out there.

At first this didn't seem all that interesting. Then I realized I have some current LEDs whose light is not as high of a CRI so perhaps it would be worth replacing the actual LED chip. I am not sure I understand what I'd be getting here, but would this be a legitimate use for these chips; i.e. to replace existing ones in lamps we own?

+1 on replacement usage.

Interested

Depending on the lamp that could be tricky. For one thing the power supply requirements might not match.

Scott, you might find a Partner in this deal to test...

Scott are you saying this chip draws 100watts or is equal to 100-150 watts of power?

It seems like a no compromise chip....but it it's only equal to a 150 incandecent it's a bit pricey for a DIY chip with no PS, heat sink, frame, or controller....

Don't get me wrong, I would love to se up a grid of these chips in a frame and blast out some lumens, but at $85 a chip it would cost a small fortune

I tried tracking down pricing on some of the more high power Crees before, but had no idea they were this expensive.

EDIT....looks like it may draw up to 150 watts....should have read the specs...
I may be interested then as well...

The chip itself can draw up to 150 watts. I'm running mine at 120 watts. My guess is that it is equivalent to approximately 750-1000 watt incandescent. I have some 250 watt tungsten but the dispersion pattern on those is wider so it is tricky to compare exactly. I'll see what I can do though.

ya the 150 watt confused me, as I've never seen a chip with that high a draw.....which is insanely powerful.

I may be interested once I figure out the extra costs involved

Yes it is very bright with the 120 watt power supply that I am using.

I think my power supply was $60-70 and the heat sink with fan was about $40. I'm ordering some larger heat sinks to pair with 140mm fans. I think I may be able to run 2 chips per fixture this way for some crazy output!

The cost is one thing, putting together a final solution is another. I wish I could provide something turn key but I just don't have time yet.

I might be in as well but would suggest that you or other members piece together g
fixtures, power supplies and flicker free dimmers like the led rope group buy I joined to attract more users who don't gave time / knowledge enough to sort out end to end solutions themselves. Might you get a better rate for more commitments then 10?

Thank you,

Thank you,

I agree that it would be better to have a full package available. Unfortunately I do not currently have time to organize this. Perhaps down the road after I finish remodeling my studio :)

For larger quantities the price only comes down a few bucks a chip. I think if 50+ chips are ordered then it might come down further. This isn't as much about the price as the ability to get the chips at all without everybody having to buy 20-50 for themselves.
