  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy - Hexolux LED Spotlights

As Mark Toia would probably say . . . Lumens are like Horse Power in a race car: Only the power you can control is useful. Putting light exactly where you want, at precisely the correct level, with the minimum of cutter flags etc is what determines ultimate lighting fixture usefulness.

???? I try not to criticize anymore at reduser as the noise level is so high, but this... I'm sorry belongs with the noise. A subjectively made opinion comparing with lights would be in order here. We all compare to what we know. He didn't ask for the technical. He asked for what someone felt this was equal to.

Cheers and the boyz at Hexolux say this GB is doing great!

Josh, may I ask you to ask them a longer D-tap-to-illuminator cable? At least as an option, but It would be nice if it was part of the kit as it should.
This fixture is pretty lightweight. It makes a lot of sense to have a brick battery in place of a sand bag on the opposite end of a junior boom arm.
I bought the kit specially for jobs where I need to pack lightweight for flying and gaffer/electrician is not with me

I don't even know what this means but it seems maybe I have somehow upset up. I believe I have answered the question posed a couple different times in this thread.

A bare bulb 400 HID might be brighter . . . so what if you're trying to illuminate a specific detail on set. That's where control is critical.

good idea!

I do apologize if this has been answered earlier and I do truly apologize if I'm misreading this - but the answer it all comes to distance, focus of lens and flags etc - is critical for your outcome. That's and again my apologies. A little silly to me. I am though on iPhone, just after a client dinner with A LOT of wine, so I might be completely out of line here. Personally I'm interested myself in what it could be compared to as I'm accustomed to any light imaginable in film making, except for LED. In this case I'm probably gonna jump on it anyway, because I find it versatile and I especially think the spread on full flood is very intriguing.

So I understand if it has been answered already, but then just link for the poor guy and me lol. As some not always have time to follow threads or jump in at late stages.

If necessary I can paint a picture of a scenario on set including bouncing, t-stop, distance to bounce and flags etc lol. But let's just say straight up no fuzz barn doors normally open - focused, fully flooded is by choice (doesn't matter to me lol) - what then, does it compare to? Red head, blondie, 575 hmi? Lol

Or just link and if that's annoying (which, even though this long post, I actually would completely understand) just ignore this post lol

Heya Josh, not trying to be annoying. Just trying to figure out if two D7's will be enough, or if I need to get 3. :001_tongue:

Since you have been with the lights, trying to get a sense of if two D7s compare in terms of basic light output to which of the following - as an example - would truly help.

I get and appreciate your thoughts on control/versatility. Just need to get a sense of where two units will sit in terms of light output and any thoughts on the quality of the beam anyone is willing to share. Perhaps even folks from Hexolux directly.

Thanks for this GB!

+) The previous Hexolux LUX120 - 120w LED 7" light engine was compared to '1000W Halogen Fresnel'.

The new D7 light engine is 125w DC / 150w AC
Based on at 5ft / 15deg data, the D7 is 2020 fc vs 1400 fc for the LUX120 (44% brighter)
+) This should make the D7 equivalent to a 1.4KW Halogen Fresnel.

There is a table on the Hexolux site that shows the 60 degree fc (lumens per square foot) at distance of 5ft, 9.8ft and 16.4ft.
This corresponds to a total lumen output of 5500, 6030 and 7400 lumens respectively.

By comparison the Area 48 (160 degree) is ~11,000 lumens.

Hey RED Brother and Sisters,
I'm going to hand over the Q&A task to the fine gents at Hexolux since from here on they are in a much better position to answer specific technical questions and to update us about order fulfillment.
Cheers!

I'm really interested in these for mixed photo/video use.

When doing as such I normally need a fresnel for punchy light and a strobe into a diffused bounced umbrella for soft light.

Hoping that these guys will do both tasks to standard. The versatility is cool, put it in the fresnel one moment, put it in an umbrella the next.

Any idea of shipping times once ordered? a week or 2 or...

Can anyone confirm that you can lock the barn doors and soft box solidly to the front of the light? In the video Josh posted it seemed like it might not latch on the top of the light and therefore could be an issue when rigged above or upside down without modification. But seeing how smart the design is on these lights, that doesn't sound right... Looking for some feedback.

(refer to about 4 min and 40 second into the video)

Edit: Also curious if there is an option to power the light with anton bauer batteries instead of v mount and if so, whether it would be using standard mounting plate and connectors or if it would need to be a proprietary part from Hexolux? Don't see an option on their site for AB at the moment.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi All,

I'm the one in the video doing the demo, I invented the lights out of my own desire to have better lights for shoots.
Sorry for delay, the registration/activation process took a few days, that's why I posted answers on the blog. (thank you Paul for posting the link)

Please let me know if you have any questions. I can answer them here now.

Thanks,
Pete Smith

Hey Pete,

Really cool design. Looking forward to working with them soon. Really appreciate you doing the group buy for RU's. Thanks!

I know you guys are trying to keep special orders to a minimum. Does this mean it won't be possible to specify AB mount for the battery plate? That would be great for those that primarily work with AB and don't want to purchase additional gear for the light kit.

At the moment I'm not seeing the AB plate listed online in the store, just v-mount. Is this a proprietary plate/cable for the hexolux light? Is it a similar cost to the vmount?

Thanks for the help,

Steve

Here's my question - Can the lights be used with any existing light due to the heat (or lack thereof), i.e. is it safe.

I'm especially interested in the umbrella attachment - does it take any umbrella type? I have some photo ones already that I use a lot, would be cool to just slot them in (standard 8mm shaft).

Also I'm presuming it's super easy to connect the two units together into essentially one light?
