  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Greg Williams " Tell Tale " in 1080p ( MX+EPIC )

5-Star moviemaking (and not only cinematography ;-) my friend.

Kudos to the whole crew and RED -- you have a great tool for offering indeed. The new sensor (and cameras' form factor) are the ultimate milestone actually.

I can't wait for having my hands on both (my) Scarlets 2/3" and S35 ...

(Cheers, E. :-)

I've gotta say, this looked like someone just cut together raw red footage and didn't bother even touching it with a basic color grading app. If you're going to take the time to shoot on such a nice camera, why drop the ball on the coloring end?

The highlights at 1:44 looked atrocious. The hot highlights had been pulled down to a flat gray. Throughout the rest of the film, the blacks were very washed out, and skin tones were inconsistent between shots.

I can understand a muted, hazy, desaturated visual style, but there must be an indication that you are still putting care in to an image if you are going to go that route.

Sorry about the harsh critique. Just being honest.

Yes, anyone can be aware of it. It is an aesthetic option, though. Discussing its merits and shortcomings can be useless pending on the POV. Maths never is opinion. Fair useful for posting in a forum about the new potential addressed to the redusers in any way whatsoever.

Shot at "Red Studios - Hollywood" ... Cool

I agree with the color critiques , consistency wise, but I love it anyway... nicely done!!!!

images are beautiful!

Love the 13+ stops, you can really see it! I am wondering if the washed-out look is the gamma issue in h.264 or just a look they were trying to achieve - ? Regardless, you can really tell what a hit this camera is going to be! Excellent work!

Its difficult to visually critique something on youtube. Pity there isn't a downloadable HD version.

Been seeing a lot of blown-out shots recently, revisiting Battlestar...they really pushed the boat out in that show, at points very daringly.

Overall though I did like really like the sections in the house. Great stuff.

Not sure that Youtube is doing it justice. Watching in 720P it looks strange at times. I wouldn't judge it in this format. Perhaps a higher res version will come along at some point.

Nonetheless, it is great seeing Greg's work and seeing the Epic in action. Even with Youtube's compression and weird color shifts you can see the power of the new sensor. Clients are really loving the footage from M-X. Thanks for posting this Jarred!

Very nice....What did you use to do the color grade? What lens selection did you use?

Dave

Great acting, good cinematography!

In regards to the color shifting. Could it have been the MX vs. the EPIC?
I know they have the same sensor, but I'm guessing they have different ways of processing it.

Firstly, it's moody and HOT! I like it. Arkin was a great choice I think. He's got some gravitas, and he's just a wee bit shifty.

OK, Clifton's ECU might have too much lift. The blacks are milky but it is YouTube.
On the other hand, it looks like a scenario I've seen a dozen times: On set we all agree on the light. In the timing we get into a debate about fill levels... and the chicken shit always wins so we get grey instead of black, or an ugly power window. It's a guess, but I don't feel like I'm out on a limb.

This is too funny. If the blacks are not milky, we're talking about crushed blacks. If not, they are milky.
Is there anyone who has been told they show a significant portion of details within instead?

BTW, rarely seen in digital acquisition realm.

I'm not getting your point. Are you saying these blacks are not milky? You can see detail in the dark side of his face, but at the expense of true blacks. If you bring the shot into line with the others, you lose that detail. That is why I presume it was a grading choice.

My point is that these shots do not match any of the others. It's a minor point, but that shot may be what the critics on pg. 1 were complaining about. Frankly, it looks like error to me. I say "Be bold. Embrace your inner Willis. Fight for blacks, and don't let the pussies win." If you need more fill add it on the set and don't try to do it in post. It takes a really good colorist to pull it off I think.

I'd still rather have seen and I did in 360p. I like to compare with others seen in low resolution and see how it holds as much as we go down. I always remember the feeling to have seen S-VHS or Hi8 acquisition vs. VHS shot on 35mm or even 16mm film. Compare with the DSLRs and you'll (only) check the differences. I am a HDSLR lover by the way, not exactly a fanboy but only RED fan from day one; just renewed once again today.

Sure you bite it :-) My point is only to make my choice in order to see the glass half full rather than half empty ;-) A way more useful for redusers IMHO.

Full it is.

Bite it? That's not what you said the first time I read it. ;-)

LOL If I'm used to make my choices based on pictures, that's what for the metaphors (and an editor) should serve, right? ;-)

Brilliantly shot and edited.
The most striking aspect of Epic images in this short is the highlight reproduction. The shot of wife's white shirt, while she's sitting on bed is nothing short of brilliant. Can't wait to work with Epic images.
Yes, it is difficult to judge compressed images, especially on Youtube. Many prefer Vimeo.
Nevertheless, with a little bit of care, it's still possible to create a visually cohesive project. Color finishing of this wonderful short could use a little more of that care to have a more consistent look.
