Hi there helpful folk of the RED-world

So, I have a shoot coming up in a few weeks. It's a greenscreen shoot, and I'll be camera tech/operator. The DP is an excellent fashion stills shooter, but has limited motion experience.

We're shooting 4K on the Scarlet. The DP want to shoot vertical to maximise the resolution.

The talent will be standing against a 20ft x 20ft green screen in a studio. Lighting package (planned) are kino's for the screen lights and HMI's for the key light.

The idea is to pull stills in post, or conform to a very slow framerate, to create a kind of staccato stop-motion effect. So I was planning on shooting a little faster than normal to minimise motion blur - eg 1/120. And shooting 30fps to give us a little bit more flexibility in post (there's no sound).

Will I run into problems with the HMI's at 30 1/20? Can you foresee any other problems with this setup?

All help greatly appreciated.

Sam

For greenscreen work, always shoot at the lowest compression ration (3:1, don't remember what Scarlet's capabilities are) to get the best key. You'll need a lot of kinos to combat the power of an HMI for the key, obviously depending on what exposure you're going for. Try and go for 40-70 IRE and you should be fine.

If you're trying to pull stills out of the motion files, 1/120 should be fine if the models aren't moving much. You shouldn't have any problems with flicker at 30fps - 1/120.

Hi Chris, thanks so much for your help - really appreciated!

I don't think the Scarlet will go down to 3:1, but we'll go as low as we can.

Thanks

And go Daylight balanced.

Put some green gel over the Kino's to help get a nice flat matt with no white spots.
