Hi everyone. I wanted to ask...Anyone have issues with RED EPIC noise issues on green screen? It's so bad that I can hardly key the thing out! Why?... I was shooting at iso 800, 5600K, 5K FF, 3:1 ratio I mean... it should not be noisy. I even blackshaded my camera... here are the examples. The second pic has the noise... I don't know how to attach an r3d...

I'd be happy to take a look at an r3d still however, I doubt it's that noisy in the footage and it's just the key. I do however shoot everything at 320ISO if possible. 800 is pretty noisy.

The footage is underexposed. Had to bump ISO to 2500 to get proper exposure. Your shot is not wasted though just run it through a de-noiser ( I tried Neat Video on your shot) and it keyed nicely.

First look.

Exposure looks good. Bottom half of green screen is about 1 stop under the top half of the frame.

Your green is resting from 20-60 IRE. while it is "all green" it's not evenly lit green, no problem a few mattes should clean it up no problem. In the R3D I am looking at there is virtually no noise, but the lower end of the frame will not just key the way the top end does.

The green stick was a bit to bright and that will also cause a bit of a problem. But I did a quick and dirty key in about 10 seconds.

No problem with the footage though in terms of noise.

True, exposure looks good (ie nothing really clipping), but does appear to look better (and more evenly lit) at 2000 ISO, where the histogram appears more centered and evenly distributed. So about 1.5 stops extra light may have helped.

That said, as others have noted, all the information is "there", and you have all the ingredients and flex to deliver a GREAT shot!!

PS - this project looks cool!

Good luck!!

It is a bit under exposed but I just think you need a better keyed. This was with Keylight in Nuke.

Thanks guys. Yea the NUKE key looks better. I think it looks bad though. Not because of your doing but because of my lighting. Good thing this was a test day! :) any suggestions for lighting subjects to match the scene with green screen?

Hi Alex

In terms of lighting this is pretty simple, just look at your back ground image, look at how the light is working on the trees. I'd have one light behind the subject pointing towards the lens of the camera, this would be in roughly the position the sun is in the background frame. This will put your highlights in the right place, then have a warm reflected fill from the front just below the lens.

Good luck

In real life, looking into the sun and the backlit trees, the bug would be fairly silhouette. I'd do a warm backlight and a cold soft top light for the sky, and maybe a warm bounce from below to suggest the sun bouncing off of the ground (though it would probably be a bounce off of green foliage...)

I would not apply sharpening to the raw files and sharpen in comp after keying if necessary.
Definitively backlight your subject, considering the backdrop you are putting it in.
I personally shoot green screen religiously at much lower shutter angle and add post motion blur.
As moving parts get lost easily in motion blur on green screen once keyed.

Cheers. ///

I rate Epic and Dragon at 320 in every case I can.

Thank you. I thought it was just me. But every time I rate the camera at anything above 400 ISO I regret it. The blue noise in the green screen makes it almost unusable. Especially in Tungsten light.
