  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Green Screen - Help Please

Shoot daylight balance or as close to as possible and avoid 2K. Don't push exposure, but that's not really Red-specific... Just pulling some keys now - apart from the fact that RC keeps crashing on me, couldn't be happier - you'll be fine!

I have done some GS tests - best material t work with I've had, so far... But the main problem here is lightening, exposure and focus...

I think the "green plate" with separate matte sounds like a good idea.

Even better: Re-shoot.

I've found settings that work with some shots fairly well, but not others. I can get away with the 'washed out' green in some shots, but in others it's no use. Pushing the saturation or processing as Rec709 color space just increases the blue noise and makes it harder to get clean keys.

I'll be discussing the options with director next week.
 
In terms of lens choice which way would be best for GS S4cooke or Master prime?

As sharp as possible or a bit of softness ok?
 
It can help to throw the green BG a little out of focus (helps smooth out any variations) but you generally want sharp edges on your foreground, as anything that blurs into the green will be a pain later.
 
If you can afford them, MPs are definitely the ideal choice. As Dylan says, you want your FG as sharp as possible in an ideal world. Choice of lens (type, not focal length!) won't affect your DoF at all, so you should still be able to get the BG a little soft if you've got good screen/subject seperation, which of course is always desirable in any event!
 
Late update - the same footage, exported as ASA 400, 3200K with Linear Light Gamma keyed well in Combustion with Keylight. The shot I provided was one of the worse ones, but even they are performing fairly well.
