  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Green & magenta highlight fringe - why?

Here's the same from a Cooke 18-100 @ T3 18mm

Jeff, love this chart!

Does show that CA and lack of resolution/softness are major assets of the Cooke 18-100. Evaluating from the chart makes the Cooke a rather inferior lens. We all know that the opposit is the case. Filming charts does make sense on a scientific level - surely not when ist comes to actual filmmaking.

Yeah, the chart makes the Cooke look a bit soft. Although, part of that is due to the wide-open aperture and the chart being a bit off of kilter. The Cooke also loses some resolution and softens out in the corners. It's a bit darker than the 18-50 chart, some just the difference in glass, but also the falloff in field illumination with the Cooke that we don't see with the 18-50.

If we go just off the charts, the Cooke indeed looks inferior. I love the images the Cooke 18-100 produces. :)

Attached two Stills

Attached two Stills

I have attached two stills captured from RedCine. I am concerned with the colored edging along the highlighted woman's cheek. Image one shows a green fringe. Image two (one second later) shows a magenta fringe. Has anyone seen this before? All current release builds were used.

Can you please repost your attached stills. I cannot seem to find those stills in this thread.

It's longitudinal chromatic aberration. You can see that even the mighty 85mm f1.2 L suffers from this pretty badly:

I can only imagine the image showed a similar phenomenon. You need special lenses (fluorite, low dispersion glass, etc.) to deal with this. Most fast lenses have this problem really egregiously.
