Green frame?

Pardon my ignorance as we just received our cameras here. Everything is about 1 week old.

I was shooting on a glidecam this weekend and just was reviewing the footage. Occasionally on some of the shots I get a half greenish/noisy frame followed by a solid green frame. Is that what a dropped frame looks like? It happened when I was shooting at 2k and 4k.

The camera's are build 17 shooting on 16gb CF cards. The greens frames did not happened during running or bumping into anything. Rather the camera was moving only slightly during the shot........but in any case shouldn't CF cards be impervious to shock/drop frame issues?

If it's not that then what is it? I tried searching but found nothing..... thank you.

I have a major problem with green and grey frames. Open up the .r3d file in red alert and see if they are present there too. Rebuild your proxies and wish for the best.

We used the segway and a steadicam Monday and there will be burst of green frames for like 4 out of the 10 seconds. Footage is useless. He was on smooth pavement too. Nothing crazy...

Solid state drives is all I can think to do...(which you did) Nobody has them since they are 3x the price of the 320g... Unless you are shooting birds chirping locked down I wouldn't use the spinning drive...

there is obviously a larger problem going on here with your system, the RED Raid works great and rarely drops frames unless you fill it near full or beat it around too much while recording, even most handheld use can't drop a frame on the drive. It's very solid.

Ok after exchanging a few emails, the consensus was that it was my sandisk CF card reader that was the problem. Made sense since it was happening on 6 of my 8 cf cards and both my cameras. So I don't think it was the cameras or a possible bad card.

I bought the recommended Lexar cf card reader and re-downloaded the material.....boom! problem solved.


upgraded to 20.1.3 prep'd the cameras and went to do a big shoot. 2 days in I saw my first green frame again on 2 different cards......argh....

glad I was verifying my downloads! I had green frames on all the clips in that card's download. Looked like a bad download.

I had 2 CF card readers in a daisy chain downloading 2 cards at the same time (shooting 3D). I figured that might be the problem......plugged just one card in and re-downloaded the "bad download".......bam! no problems....

Then went on for a few more days on this job with no more problems.....

It just scares me since we recycling cards so much, if I fail to catch a "bad download" we can end up with unusable footage. It just seams like we shouldn't be having all these issues with the CF cards.....

So the moral of the story is : Always carefully verify your footage after you download it! Have at least 1 extra CF card reader on set at all times.
