So Zacuto Gave me an opportunity to test out their new evf the "Eye".

Firstly I have not had a lot of experience with Evfs (except back when i started with an XL-1). On my Red I always either use my 5" touch or an external Monitor. However I have had more and more clients I rent to ask me for an EVF. (especially broadcast people)

My first impression was WOAH... I was used to Heavy bulky Evfs with huge batteries attached, not so much with the Eye. This new design is super compact, and has bunch of features including focus assist, 3d LUT support, and others. which you can control from the little "joystick" on the front of the evf

My Favorite thing about this evf besides the rugged build is the special power cord they provide. It has a 2 pin Lemo-D-tap woven together with a SDI cable to connect to your camera, which works perfectly with red cameras

another thing I was really into was how compact and light weight the set up felt with the Evf mounted on the camera. In the past the main thing that has turned me off was the big bulky look and feel of evfs, and also most I have seen are made of cheap materials. The Eye is made of metal and has anti fogging which is huge for cold weather.

like I said I don't have a lot of experience with EVFs, but the camera team I worked with on a short film "Locke" all seemed super impressed. It was on set for 5 full days of production and it performed flawlessly.

I use a jet-pack from switronix, but any v-mount battery with a d-tap would work

I use this service (first to pop-up on google) https://postimage.org/ - let's you upload multiple files and gives forum thumbnails links that work by just copy/pasting them.

Thanks for the write-up! I actually have the Eye sitting in a BH Wishlist called "Scarlet Accessories -- Stage 2" haha. Good to hear first-hand. Definitely looking for an ultra-compact solution myself as I'm operating outside a lot of the time and have a wireless director's monitor with me on set always now (no more directors/producers huddling over my shoulder).

EDIT: Also, did you observe any noticeable drop in battery life when using the P-Tap? I would image it doesn't suck a whole lot of juice (especially when pulling power in conjunction with the Scarlet). Just curious though.

So weird about the photos, I right-clicked and copied the image address and it worked perfectly in my browser, but the embed doesn't seem to be functioning. Hmmmmmmm

I have one and really like it. I also have the Gratical, and the eye is much smaller and I don't have to worry about a whole other set of batteries, and having to change batteries during the day, other than changing the camera battery. I don't notice much of a drop in battery life of my camera battery, but since I am taping off the V-mount plate, the eye continues to draw power even if the camera is turned off, so I have to unplug it.
