on a LOW-NO budget.

grading my reel.. Got an amazing fast computer (5fps render in color of full debayer 2k)

now... what is the best way to grade on a low/no budget (monitor wise)

I dont have a pro monitor.. I have a 19'' samsung TV that actually looks pretty good.. I used my computer to calibrate with the advanced settings.. I am able to get good blacks and whites..

would you recommend that spyder tool?
or just going for it?
A and B ing it with my macbook pro monitor?

other (not super pricey) monitors?

Use a old CRT monitor?

Spyder is designed for consumer television sets. It gets you close, which is better than eye balling it. I have taken the files from the Spyder and turned them into TIFF so that I can calibrate the consumer monitor via my editing hardware and connections rather than from a DVD player so that the entire path is considered. I use that monitor for the large client screening - for color correction I use a Dreamcolor.

I've found the samsung 2343BWX 23" to be very nice.

I've tested it and compared it to many different other monitors it seems very true. It's blacks are pretty awesome, just turn down its brightness a little bit. Biggest benefit is the 2K resolution not odd scaling as result. I think that has helped the most. I've pushed this monitor a fair amount, great simple cheap solution.

i think the fw900 CRT is my best bet..
I THINK!

CRT's are still the standard correct?
what else do I need to have a pretty good and accurate set up?

Blackmagic card?

calibration tool?

my people on my reel went from looking perfect on my samsung.. to looking like salmon on my macbook pro

Basically you can set your monitor to 65D temp, and then using the proc amps from a matrox mxo/mxo2 or the controls on your monitor calibrate to bars.. pretty good results.

I think the best deal is getting a panny pro 11 series and grading off of that.

Pro houses are using these panels.
