  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GPU for RedCode and Redcine

Anyone have a recommendation on optimal video cards for Redcode and the Redcine. My workflow includes 2 30" displays so any card would have to support two DVI outputs.

Maybe be talking fraff here but as far as I was aware, RedCode is a CPU dependant codec.

So you would only have to make a choice on the GPU based on other needs not relating to Redcine or the RedCode.

REDCINE harnesses both the CPU and GPU, so what graphics card you have is important. RED just haven't announced exact minimum required specs yet.

I know that when playing 1080p files on Apple.com/trailers, my computer starts lagging abit.

I got a intel pentium dualcore 3,4 ghz with 4mb memory
RAM is at 3gb and my GPU is Nvidia geforce 7800 GTX
People say that this is enough for editing 4K, but I'm barely able to edit true 1080p.

It feels like I have to get a better GPU, because if a dualcore 3,4 ghz 4mb processor with 3gb RAM isn't enough for redcode raw, I don't know what type of computer you must have...

Running a Mac Pro 8 core with 4 gigs of RAM Final Cut Studio 2 lates.

Looking at ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Looking at ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Was looking at the ATI Radeon X1900 XT. Anybody use this card in their Red setup. Was also looking at some of NVidia's Quadro FX series. The latter are a bit pricey but have some series processing power. Maybe too much for the post production video work this system will be used for. Any thoughts?

Glazarus, What kind of codec are you editing in 1080p?

Editing and viewing is dependant on the codec, not only the resolution and frame reate. Therefore I wouldn't conlude to quickly that your computer won't be able to edit REDCODE RAW 4K.

antoine.

I'm editing in Avid and it's not that I'm unable to edit 1080p, but it's barely.
I don't have a mojo so...
Also, the 1080p trailers at apple.com/trailers is lagging quite a bit.

I have an X1900 in my 8 core Mac Pro, which I'm hoping will be fine for REDCINE. It's certainly fine for FCP and Color. Graeme did tell me in the past "You will not need a Quadro FX", although of course no RED spec is set in stone. In fact if you read the details, the specs for the Quadro FX 4500 for the Mac Pro are pretty much identical to the X1900, except for the 3D stereo port. Not worth the extra money IMHO unless you specifically need the 3D port.

Nick,

You should be just fine with that X1900 as it's really the best GPU available in the Mac Pro right now. The FX4500 does have its uses, but it's two generations behind the X1900 and it lacks the performance on some shader operations and some tasks not directly related to geometry. Just like you said, about the only advantage is the 3D stereo and genlock port. There's a couple hardware advantages, but if you don't already know about them and have software requesting them, then you don't need them. If I were to buy a Mac Pro today and money was no object, I would choose the X1900XT video card. I am really hoping that when the new Xeon CPUs and Intel chipsets ship in the next couple months that Apple will beef up its GPU offerings. This is one area they really need to work on.

On the Windows side of things, I think any of the higher-end GeForce 8 series would be the way to go. Even those with GeForce 7800GTX, especially SLI 7800GT/GTX will be in good standing. The faster offerings in the latest generation ATI line should be just fine too.

Of course, we don't know all the specifics yet... I wonder if REDCINE is OpenGL based or if it's separated by platform using the latest OS GPU tie-ins -- such as Core Animation on OSX.

The iMac has more GPU power with that ATI 2600 than the Mac Pro even if you factor in that ancient Quadro FX4500. These new iMac systems are pretty cool. Desktop Core2 Extreme CPU in the 24" - huzzah! I only have two complaints about the iMac line. 1> Where's the 30" model??? 2> On the 24", why is there no DVI input so it can serve as both a kick ass computer and a display for another system. That's one of those features that have been requested ever since the iMac went to the low-profile design not much bigger than a screen by itself.

I have similar problem with quick time player, sometimes it lags, not sure why.

Well hard to say before testing, but it seems that people on Crossing the Line, were able to edit this REDCODE RAW 4K on the set with Mac Book Pro (which is not more than one sigle intel Core2Duo) and final edit on the Mac Pro, both on FCP 5.1, therefore I think the Mac Pro was not made of intel quad core.

But you are saying you have dualcore 3.4 ghz, is that a Core2Duo, or a Pentium Dual? Because there is quite a lot of difference between the performence.

Don't forget you try to expand Avid Codec through software/CPU only. Thats pretty CPU extensive. And it needs a little bit of harddisc throughput too.
You know the flavours of Avid: SD with Mojo, SD with Adrenaline and HD with DNxcel and software only Composer: HD supported. This codec is meant to be hardware supported.
Whole different story than editing HD-Quicktimes in FCP.
Without having numbers, I believe the Composer SW-only version needs some more CPU steam to work in the same resolution.
While on a OSX, QT is supported by core services. Throughput provided, the QT runs comparibly easy. And uncompressed formats don't need that much of CPU anyway.(If you set an uncompressed QT in FCP against the MC).

And this should be completely different again with REDcode.
I bet all of your machines will be slow as hell when we talk about REDcine and decomposing to DPX or something equivalent. Byuy the machine when you need it and then: buy the fastest in balance of your need and affordability.
Don't know which camera you have, but might be a few months away.

Hopefully the mac pros get an update soon since the imac (ruling out the quadros) has more gpu power than the mac pros right now

Well, isn't that one of the reasons Color is not so fast?
New generation of GPU's should speed things up...right?

Jeff ?

I think as Apple offers more powerful GPUs, we'll see an increase in performance in Color. But Color itself could stand some more optimization and there's still a lot of room for it to grow.

The iMac has what is essentially the next generation of GPU inside it compared to the X1900XT option for the Mac Pro. The Quadro card isn't any faster than the X1900XT, in most operations it is actually slower. The Quadro provides a few specific features that some specialized applications may benefit from. Nothing in Apple's FCS2 suite or most post production, content creation software, etc.. will benefit from the Quadro FX4500. Especially at the ludicrous price that Apple is charging for it. In PC land, the FX4500 is a dinosaur and used ones can be had for under $400 pretty easily... New ones are under $1K. PNY, the leading supplier of FX4500 cards for PC systems, has actually discontinued production on them in favor of the new models. When it comes to Quadro cards and other specialized high-end type cards, I'm not sure what Apple is doing... Not sure they know what they're doing either.

Personally I am putting off the purchase of a new Mac tower until they support decent GPUs. Even though I have an early rez (#19) I am just going to use a friend's 8-core MacPro until Apple steps up. I am a long time Mac guy and I am very frustrated with this situation. Perhaps with the release of Leopard they will be able to support state of the art GPUs :ranting2:

Same here. I'm going to use my friend's 8-core Mac Pro too. He is also my FCP editor so it actually works out fine for now. I'm particularly interested in seeing if there will be support for those external nVidia Quadro Plex GPU boxes, and maybe support for the 4k projector from RED.
