Gotham City Time Lapse test NIGHT_Build 16

Francis,

Coming from you that is great to hear, your work is incredible. I agree the 16 belongs with a RED package, I am waiting for the Zeiss 18mm to complete a set of Zeiss ZFs (nikon mount) I recently acquired. The shutter was set to 1/33.

I was thinking the same thing in regards to slowing it down, sounds like it would be a mess to manipulate but I think the right artist could make some unique work there. Note to self, roll off 20 seconds of real time (24fps) just to have.

You live and learn.

Those "notes to self." I think every cinematographer has a mental library stored in the remote region of the brain of every mistake and lucky accident of every shot they have done. I know my big brain is always doing the scan when I find myself shooting something familiar. I always ask, "what worked and what looked bad." Or I borrow from one of my friends whose work is always better than mine.

Thanks for the nice compliment on my work. I have seen many talented people on this board, you being one of them. I love the fact that this Red Camera has given the opportunity to so many aspiring cinematographers that might not have been given the chance. Maybe it will change the way films are shot by the majors. Your stuff is really amazing. My first reaction was of your choice of color. I had been working on a print in photoshop this morning when I decided to check out the Reduser board. I was working on a split tone trying to find a rose color and couldn't find it (in my big brain). When your image came up of Gotham I immediately said, "That's it!" Your composition fit fine but your choice, I like to call it point of view, of color was perfect. The great thing about this Red Board is that you can learn something every day. Hopefully living is about learning (to quote you).

Francis, glad to be of service. :)

I really like this tone as well but its something I can only achieve when all the proper ingredients are together and for me the secret is in the sky. This time lapse for example I can not recreate which I find both painful and poetic in some way. I was obsessed with the evening magic hour for quite some time but now I discovering more what the morning magic hour has to offer, a whole new palette.

This forum is an incredible source information... (when people manage to play nice) its been so very useful and inspirational for me over the last year and now that I have receive my RED I feel obligated to give back.

I have only had the camera for a month or so and have been so busy renting out and working as a Redtek on other peoples shoots that I rarely get a chance to shoot with it myself...so I try to make it count when I do.

great stuff dude yes there is only one gotham city but you have captures some really nice stuff and i like to see any and all things people do with redalert. using it modestly is showing great things!

People will respond to the work. I saw this video that was shot by a production assistant. He had been working on a film and had to keep the camera over the weekend. So he shot a music video in his apartment using the Red Camera. The video was beyond beautiful. It was brilliant. I was stunned when I saw it and could not believe it was not shot by some famous DP. Goes to show you that talent has no social or political affiliations. Some people see it and run with it. Others just stare at it trying to copy the obvious. As far as people playing nice? Well, I find that when you reach a place with your abilities something peaceful happens to you. It is all about learning from others and giving back what you have learned. Those who are confident with who they are and and know how to achieve a look with a camera normally play nice. That is one special thing about the ASC. I spent Monday evening sitting next to guys like Caleb Deschanel, Billy Fraker, and Owen Roizman. We all love talking and sharing with each other. I feel the same way about sharing with fellow Red owners. We are all in this together.

I know what you mean about learning the feeling of sunrise. The colors are very different. New York has the best light in the country. LA the worst. F

Hey Francis, I saw this music video projected in 4k at the NAB RED booth this year and it was incredible...RED is defiantly leveling out the playing field. Where can I see this video now, is it online somewhere?

You earned those initials and I am fortunate to be in a part of this community that draws in pros of your caliber...dont hesitate to hit me up if you roll through Brooklyn.

Awesome shot, and great mood in this timelapse, Clay.

I'm a bit surprised that short exposures with such long intervals (16s intervals, you say?) would result in such a smooth, gorgeous timelapse. I guess the objects moving in frame (clouds, boats) are all moving pretty slowly. Are you sure about that interval time? Most people who shoot clouds, for example, do like 1-7s intervals, I believe.

I wonder if I could use longer intervals on my star shots to give the sensor a chance to cool down on warm evenings. I might try it out.

Shoot more, man!

Hey C.H. Haskell,
The shot of your rig on the balcony, with a bit of fog, overlooking the only Gotham there is, with "The Dark Knight" set for release, just blew my mind! The 'raw' RED image blew my mind too, for the detail in such (lack of) light, and your post post pic is great. I'm looking forward to more of your posts!

...And now I see the timelapse!... I REALLY have to stop eating at those cheap restaurants at 4am!

Thanks Tom, I wish I had slowed it down to be honest but yeah 16sec was my setting. I was on 16 cause I did not want to load a RED drive down but after my test I realized that an entire evening of TL on the RED DRIVE hardly burned up any space, less ten 10%. It was not a very prepared test, crew went to bed and I set up the camera...Is there a way I can verify my TL setting via the RrD?
