Just got myself one of these units, a poor man's solution to timelapse and motion control. Will be starting a shoot in the coming week so looking forward to see what I can accomplish. Just wondering if anyone else here has used one, or has thought on it?

No worries, am heading out later today for my first trials. Been waiting for the right weather and tides here in Bali. Some mud flats shoots slated later in the week too.

Will post results.
 
It's pretty handy and especially portable. The only issue I've had is the torque of the motor is not big enough to hold heavier cameras rock steady in wind.

Having just played around with the unit in the office at the moment I can say that the setup procedure is an absolute breeze. It's a very well thought out product and am chomping at the bit for Thursday early morning's planned shooting. Low tides out on Mud flats with large fishing boats high and dry. Fingers crossed it will be a good day to shoot. Will only have pan capability as will be heading to Singapore, from my base in Bali, to pick up a Konova 1.2m slider sometime in the next ten days.

Hi Stacey, I would imagine the best people to ask would be the manufacturers themselves. I guess the unit only works with it's own menu settings. Communication wise I can't see EPIC listed in the camera compatibility listings BUT it does also have an option for IR remote triggering. maybe that would work? Again, best to communicate direct with the manufacturer.

So just been out to my local go to nature spot. Serangan Island here in Bali. Lots of bird life, expanses of water and potential for big skies. Am just editing the sequence and will upload later. It's just a simple 45 degree clockwise pan across an expanse of water with cloud reflections.

Gotta say the Syrp Genie for setting up is absolute breeze. Very intuitive, just gotta remember to set the lens to Manual or it can have issues and miss set shots. Scratched my head a few times before figuring that. I'm sure it's in the manual but, my bad.



Used my trusted set of Manfrotto sticks, slipped off the 501HDV head and plugged the Genie straight onto them, than added a Wimberley ball head to control the camera level. Worked well. Will post the resulting clip later, all 14 seconds of it.

Thanks for posting. I'm looking forward to seeing the footage. I see you're setup with a DSLR, are you also trying this with the Epic. I'm interested in getting one as it seems ideal for Timelapse panning on the move - I contacted the manufacturers and they say it would work with an Epic - the unit looks compact and robust. Looking forward to hearing more.

Am working DSLR's on a project around Indonesia at the moment so no impending tests to be done with an EPIC. If I had one for sure I'd be posting tests with that one. I'm a throwback from the first generation of RED One users / buyers from the good ol' days. My deposit was down with the first bunch back in October 2006! Yikes.

I just hang around here as there are some cool folks to interact with.

Just trying out some deflickering software as this was shot on AV mode so gotta address that. As a first off attempt with the Syrp Genie though am happy with it. The programming and running of the unit is a breeze.


Settings:

Canon 5DMkII
Aperture Priority
ISO160 @ f18 for 1/80th
Manual Focus
420 RAW Files

Photograph Interval: 8 sec
Pan Motion: 45 Degrees CW
Total Duration: 14sec Master seq at 30fps
Final Duration: 17sec at 24p

I guess there must be the cable communication with EPIC, this appeared on the SYRP FB page this morning...

Well two weeks down the road and I can say that I love this little module. So informative, simple to use, easy to program.

My latest test with this unit was yesterday. Post production of the 407 stills courtesy of LRTimelapse plugin for Lightroom.


Yes there is a drastic light change, bloody clouds wouldn't obey instructions ;)

Canon 24-105mm f4 @24mm - f4 for 1/15th at ISO320 with Hoya 10 stop ND filter.

Gitzo 6X Carbon sticks
FV Slider (Chinese made, I spent too much on lenses, but it works)
