  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GOPRO Hero3 - 4K

Fellow RED User Mike Tiffee and I had some fun with the Hero3s last week here in Northern CA with our Powered Paragliders! This was shot at 1080p/60 and Mike edited in Premiere and After Effects. Gotta love YouTube compression... but make sure and play it at 1080p of course :)

Rolling SHutter looks much better than before! Any 2.7k examples?

I shot another PPG session in 2.7K the other day. Rolling shutter is much more noticeable, which isn't surprising. I do see how having the camera on a more stationary mount in 2.7K makes a lot of sense now... head movements when helmet mounted are pretty hard on the footage at 2.7K. I'll try and post an example when I get around to editing that stuff.

Overall though, I'm really happy with the camera. Aside from the few firmware bugs (we can all relate, I'm sure...) which are getting worked out with updates, the camera has been pretty solid, and the image quality is incredible. Makes the Hero2 look like grainy crap, honestly. Crazy how spoiled I feel now with the Hero3 Black.

By the way, as you can tell, most of the footage in the video above was shot after the sun dropped below the horizon, to about 30 minutes afterwards. The shot toward the end when Mike is coming around the Oak trees before landing was around 30 minutes after sunset and looks STELLAR...

Trever, is there anyway to download it in better codec before youtube "rape" it? Thanks for posting.

Here are a couple examples of the GoPro3 (Black) 720p 120fps:

1st POV shot played at realtime, 2nd POV shot (giant 360 cliff huck) conformed to 24fps. Greybird overcast day but you can get an idea:

Here you can see Epic at 5k 99fps next to three GoPro3 720p 120fps shots....The GoPro looks pretty soft next to the Epic :)....but still usable for my applications for many situations.
GoPro at 0:45, 0:55, 1:02

This thread has been dead for a while now. :) Does anyone have any input on how it cuts together with R1, Epic, or Scarlet footage for a 2k finish? It would be great if someone shared their experience and maybe some additional test footage.

No experience, but the movie Seal Team Six: The Hunt for Osama (basically a made for tv version of Zero Dark Thirty) was shot on Epic and uses GoPro's extensively (presumable the GP3s). Basically all the car/tire shots and clearly GoPros and the rest is Epic. The movie isn't very good (in my opinion), but it's on NetFlix if you want to see how they cut together in a "real-world" application. Ironically, the GPs stuff looks so much more colourful/saturated than the Epic's (also has way more rolling shutter, but they're vehicle/tire-cams mostly so it's to be expected)... Made me wonder why they didn't try to balance it better.
