  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GOPRO Hero3 - 4K

Looks great, can't wait to get it out in the surf.

One thing baffles me... These guys bought Cineform, right? Why don't they utilize it?

Yes, they own cineform and it's a great tool or it WAS a great tool. Seems development is stagnant on it....for example their 3d workflow is great, but no RAW capability..nor do they intend to have it....The answer i got was Red's SDK is just too difficult or red to unwilling to work with them.....which meant to me they just aren't allocating any resources to that end of things....Too bad since it's incredible, but with no R3d's to conform to cineform, you have to add many more steps.

I think the fact they are trying to get to 4k is huge!! It would be nice if they went better codec, something that writes quick, but is better quality.

Definitely will add this sucker to my kit. Hopefully a used scarlet by days end too.

I've been tracking this all along...

For my action sports work and some documentary shots I've been using POV cameras for a few decades now, and specifically GoPro cameras as a B camera for a long time too. This new Hero3 really raises the usage possibilities to a new level! I'll be using it widely for certain projects and sequences. As a shooter the more camera options I have, the happier I am ;)

Through this year our company (Golden Gate 3D) has been shooting 3D with GoPro Hero2 3D rigs as a B rig to augment our A rig of Epics. A Hero3 3D rig will be a much better companion for an Epic 3D rig than the Hero2 3D rigs were.

Traditionally POV cameras have been used mostly in the mobile EFP style of work, obviously not in traditional cinematography. IMO the EFP/ENG and Red forum would the best place for this thread. The GoPro3 demo reel is a classic mobile EFP action sports reel...I know, action sports have been one of my core genres of production throughout my career. Just sayin'...

120fps at 720p is pretty incredible. really looking forward to pushing this thing

They're probably being deluged with orders...

I'm on their web site right now without any problems.

Does anyone know if the '3d hero' housing still works with the new camera, or at least the 3d camera sync cable ?

Yesterday was the last best before date of HD cameras. Hereinafter the standard is what R1 was years ago, and puck has not stopped there.

GoPro site says, "
The HERO3: Black Edition is compatible with all GoPro mounting accessories and older generation BacPacs™ along with the newer generation LCD Touch BacPac and 2nd generation Battery BacPac. However, as all HERO3 cameras have a new size and shape they require HERO3-specific Wrist, Skeleton and 3D housings so be sure to check for HERO3 compatibility when purchasing any new housing accessories."

Les, beyond what David posted, here's some more of the info you asked about:

GoPro's new Dive Housing demo reel:

GoPro's has a link to a page on their web site for the new Dive Housing:
http://gopro.com/hd-hero-accessories/dive-housing/

Photos of it on that GoPro web site page show that it has a larger port than the stock splash housing. Cost for the water housing is just $49.99

As David posted, apparently the original housing will still work with the Hero3. But I'm also guessing they may be offering a new 3D housing. I don't know about the 3D camera sync cable...my guess is that the original 3D sync cable will work with the Hero3.

Well, this is a game changer for my Autocopter I am just finishing. Looks like I can get SD out as a preview. That will allow me to send exactly what the Hero3 is recording back to my FPV googles or screen.

Can anyone confirm that the SD is available during "Recording"?

EDIT: I have submitted this question to GoPro support and will report back what I find out. Would be excellent to be able to see through the Her03 and be able to trigger the record on and off with the SD continuous.

They sell a HERO three composite cable, so should work..

I believe the HERO 3 needs the new 3D housing. And the new housing is optically designed for sharp video underwater and above water...which is HUGE in my book!!
