...There's already people bitching about it not doing 4K at 60fps.

Just doing my tech reading and came across this over at AnandTech. Looks like the next GoPro's SoC will be able to record 4K@30fps.

Thought others may be interested also. CES this year has really hit home that 4K is ready for mainstream adoption.

I think that thing can rip 15 or 30 8k frames off the sensor a second, just can't compress them, but would luv to record them. Tried to get Jim interested in making a pocket camera using this recording raw (this was before he started talking pocket camera then Scarlet). The previous one did something like 16mp at 30 frames a second , you can probably find a $67 camera that uses the version that can rip 4k at 30fps. We all live in a false economy. Soccer Moms get a lot of fun.

I've always conjectured that you could do some primitive 2:1 or 1.5:1 compression on frame difference etc and record that off these cameras. There are ways and means and parts to do stuff.

There where so many gopros on the snow riders this Year in Swizerland! I bet 1 of 10 skier had one on their helmet. Gopro is growing huge.

Why do you think GoPro aquired Cineform?

....well they did not aquire it to blend with other codecs that's for sure...and development at the one man band cineform house is a huge letdown...they have one of the best codecs and workflows...but are not putting any R&D $$ into working with anything BUT GoPro footage....I was inches away from buying their premium software they sell to work with R3d footage in 3d...but they are not working with R3'ds nor will they....an honest conversation there with someone that told me they are only going to work with what they have...no other codecs and....so if you want to work with R3d's you need to transcode out to something else, then convert to Cineform.....

...anyway, it's all about the $$....so they don't see any future in supporting anything but what the big brother company want them to...and it's all gopro. Too bad, since Cineform is now at a dead end in R&D for anything else....and it was the best piece of software and codec i found for my work.

But it's like the ridiculous mega pixel war with fixed lens happy-snap cameras.

Why bother having more resolution of a mediocre image due to a tiny lens. Yes, the Hero 3 is amazing for its size, but I can't imagine 4k looking better than 720 or 1080 simply because the lens is incapable of resolving anything close to that.

Kind of like resampling an MP3 at 24-bit/96Hz, what's the point?

yeah, the GoPro acquisition meant the end of Cineform already glacially slow progress as a, nevertheless, ass kicking codec. I am one of those who forked out $3K for the Neo 3D package, which now costs $1K and has no other use but to serve GoPro users. Cineform was the best, and only, cross-platform codec, so now they have stopped development, it's back to dealing with either ProRes or DnxHD, both of which have many disadvantages and are specially bad for PC users. Oh, and BTW, 4K or not, the GoPro is still nothing but an action cam, period. Useful yes, professional, I think not.

Exactly!

1. Have you tested one? It does seem the 4K image is better than the 1080p image and the lens definitely doesn't max out at or below 1080p.

2. There is a crazy community where people hack different lenses on to GoPros. That's the fun of a cheap camera!

3. You don't think they might have an interchangeable-lens version on the horizon?

This really is bad news and very short sighted sadly

They have been pushing to get cineform in one of the latest standards.

A cineform raw go pro would be a great idea.
