  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Goodbye RED Welcome EOS 5D Mark2

Low light and compact design - fer sure. It has its place, and I'll probably buy one.

But any footage I have ever seen (including all of the links in this thread) look like "video". Can't describe it any other way...
you're right

so.. a few tests.. anamorphic

on the last one.. you need to logon.. download it or you'll see the artifacts :coolgleamA:
don't take the shooter too seriously.. he's learning to deal w/ that squeezed thing.. tough :sigh:

I've seen those links elsewhere. It is 5D, yes. It is a gorgeous "toy".

I have shot a number of things recently on both the Red One and 5D and wish that Canon and Red could somehow collaborate their efforts into something right.

The RedOne has so many reliability problems that are not yet addressed even after it has been on the market for so long.

These sorts of problems would be disgraceful for a Japanese manufacturer such as Canon who would be ashamed if the 5d crashed in the middle of shots, took 3 minutes to boot up if the battery was changed, froze if you used your cellphone too near to it... etc.

Red as a company needs to stop needlessly hyping things up so much and actually just knuckle down and make the Scarlett help us all forget these problems the RedOne has gotten a reputation for.

Canon meanwhile need to sort out the rolling shutter, the odd choice of codec (that looks so compressed but yes has a higher data rate than XDCAM) and of course the frame rate problem. If they did this Red will have a very hard time beating Canon in reliability and simplicity.

You can't fool me!

The larger sensor and resulting narrow depth of field is undeniably fabulous. And the first two clips exploit this very well. But they are essentially a series of "stills". Albeit beautiful stills.

It is the motion that I am talking about that feels like "video". And you have confirmed this in the third clip. Look at the motion of the people walking by - look at the cars moving past. Feels like a "video" camera.

30 stills per second is the frame rate afaik.. ehehehehe you don't believe.. just see to believe lol

For me the 5D is a perfect camera to have around when shooting RED. Car-mounts, crash cams, underwater, ect. Perfect for that stuff and really speeds us up on the day if we want to snag a shot real quick. I always like to have one handy.

You can tell a big difference on a large screen @ 1080p in terms of resolution vs. the RED. especially along the edges. Also the H264 falls apart when doing a color grade. And the camera has it's functionality issues. But overall for the price. I love having it around!!

...Canon... They have fully embraced the new reality: artifacts are beautiful!

Unfortunately, RED is full of Luddites. They still think that aliasing artifacts and LSD should be avoided. ...

RED has also flawes Canon don't have...

BTW great video... and I didn't see any puple in the blown out white with the Canon

Patrick

PS: I shot a short wich was screened on 35mm on a theater (Locarno international film festival). Great results.

So what are the flaws the RED ONE has that the Canon doesn't?

man.. coming here to reduser asking this.. it is like to go to c###.com or ###.net forums asking if anyone heard about scarlet.. if it'll really come this or next summer

Agreed just like Lance said:
"It's not about the Bike"

That said I do have the sickest Red Package I can afford.
It is for sure about what you do with a camera, not the camera at all.
Peace.

I wonder how many people on here will ever get a 35mm release out anytime soon? This is not a dig at anyone... I just think that you may as well get out and shoot with something rather than sit around waiting for a Scarlett/Epic.

I think it is this grass is greener mentality. Your eyes keep adjusting to the quality as technology progresses, and it is always the next thing which will make you better.

If you had access to any of these dslrs in the early 1990's, you would say it was more than enough.

Shooting with what is available and actually making something is scary, cause people have to fess up to their abilities and creativity. Keeping on saying that things will be different in the future is just a masked way of being in denial or just gearlusty.

That may be true in many cases, Jim, but sometimes advances in technology literally open up new doors for filmmaking. A camera that can shoot at ISO 3200, for example, changes the game in significant ways. Some of us are literally just waiting for cameras that can do what we need, technically. For my current project, if I am finishing at 4K, I can shoot timelapse sequences on the 5D2 (5.6K RAW), but for the motion cinema sequences, I simply have no choice but to wait for a Bayer-pattern camera that can shoot 5K+ RAW, and right now, Jim is the only game in town. Sure, I could change my finishing specs to 1080p and finish the whole film more quickly, but artistically, I think the film will be FAR superior finishing at 4K.

So, while many might be making excuses, not all of us are. There are real needs for the types of cameras Jim is building.

I think that is a totally fair assessment. I didn't mean to infer a blanket statement covering everybody.
