When I met RED thought to myself, this is exactly what I want and need, but things in this world change.EOS 5D Mark 2 has changed everything. A great price, outstanding quality and FULLFRAME sensor. Finally I will use my Pentax, Nikon and Mamiya lenses.

You location says Portugal, a PAL country. How do you deal with the 30p and rolling shutter?

Hi Albert...Well, as i know my EX1 is rolling shutter and works fine in most shots, i shoot to at 1080 30p and editing on Finalcut 24p or 25p timeline the final is perfect, it works fine with finalcutstudio and compressor to make for example 30p into 24p, 25p, etc.

"outstanding quality" .... ??? ouch

How? You either have a slight slow motion in your action or periodically a frame that contains some sort of dissolve. FCP cannot invent new missing frames.

Done by slowing 30p to 24p in Cinema Tools according to the link. Does everyone have to act fast so that when they get slowed down they look normal? I'm sorry, but that's not a workflow, that's a work-around hack.

Then you go into compressor and do the rest, you have the final 30p edit on FCP and check the time and past into compressor then rendering out with the same time at 24p for example.

Compressor does not do a perfect re-timing job. Nothing does. You'll always end up with funny edges, swirlies, stuff like that. And you can't predict when or where they'll occur, because who knows when the optical flow simulation will break down? That's not a workflow, that's a luckflow.

Why all the calls for 24p / 25p if 30p can be perfectly converted every time? Even Stu says it doesn't work right all the time: http://rebelsguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=26384&highlight=#26384 and he was pretty vocal in asking for 25p/24p. He says " But while it can work often, it will fail often. And that's not a workflow. It's finger-crossing."

WHy do you need Cinema Tools, you can change frame rate in Compressor?

I used the 5D on a shoot a couple of months ago. Shooting with quality glass on a FF sensor is definitely great, but the compressed format, obvious 'jello' effect, shocking audio, lack of proper controls/functions and terrible ergonomics mean it falls way short of what I expect the Scarlet to achieve.

no connection w/ the gang though.. well AFAGK :toetap05:

- the gang

edit
AFAGK = as far as gang knows
maybe a former trainee?? :confused1:
just kidding :gnorsi:
kidding in fact

There are many cameras that can make an "outstanding quality" image at smaller sizes, and if your goal is to make kewl Youtube or Vimeo videos, then a RED is obviously overkill and a Canon will do fine.
But you'd have to see what happens on the *big* screen, and I'm sure the results there would be less than enticing...

Horses for courses. If the EOS 5D does everything you want, good for you. Not sure I understand the lenses swipe as the RED obviously allows for use of various lenses by different manufacturers.

I was going to join the Canon crowd...but I thought to myself...If it meant any artifacts...any form of 'jello' (apparently Foundry helped remedy it slightly) and that it would cost me a 1000 less for the scarlet that gave me variable framerates and the ability to upgrade in the future without throwing away my whole kit...I would rather pay the 1000...

Each to their own of course...but at the end of the day...after having tested a RED One and now editing with its footage...I can't say I would ever walk back into the 'sony, canon etc.' crowd...

Given...the most idiotic move I've made with those brands was to buy a Sony DSLR -.-

Nice Video man! Impressing results indeed from a prosumer camera.
But I wonder what it looks like in a movie theater... Vimeo and youtube is one thing, theaters another.
Anyway I think the 5Dmk2 seems to do a fine job for musicvideos at least, who ever sees musicvideos in a movietheater btw?? ;)

We're about to leave on a six week shoot in far away places. I'm certain we'll be happy we have both cameras in tow. Horses for courses.
