  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good Wireless Video Systems? How compatible is IDX Cam Wave?

Or you could use the Switronix GP-TS-RED dual battery adapter which will pas battery data, and mount the Cam Wave on one side and the RED battery on the other. When you're not running wireless transmission you have a hot swap device -- dual purpose unit.

great idea Mitch...cant believe I didnt think of that.

I'll have to try it out when I get back to the office on Friday. I think it'll fit but there's one sure way to find out.

Great idea. That would solve a lot of things. So you could run two batteries - one by itself on one side and the other one attached to the Wevi and then attached to the plate?

25 fps wevi test

25 fps wevi test

Just an update,

I´m testing Wevi in 25 Fps and works Fine, everybody that have the problem of syncro is becose have the Frecuency setting for HD-SDI in Red Monitor menu is setting to 59.94 Hz. With 50 Hz the 25 Fps works right With Wevi. As good as allways. :sarcasm:

We have developed the dummy v-mount support to power the WEVI from the p-tap, and are ready to have them manufactured. It works quite well, and can be mounted either from the rods or from the rosette on the arri baseplate, which is great for lightweight or handheld modes. It also takes stress off the cradle of holding up the drive, transmitter, and battery all at once. Mounting on the dumb side of the camera also helps offset the weight of the EVF for handheld.

Pricing will be available soon.

Thanks Birns!,

It´s a good idea. When you sell, We buy for sure.

I spoke to them and they said that if a power problem happened while using a 3rd party battery or system that is a sandwich between battery and battery plate, and they could not say that the 3rd party accessory was not the problem, it would not be covered under warranty. After an owner had one camer have a power board failure for a separate reason, he decided not to take a risk on the WEVI for powering the camera.

That's why we built the rod/rosette mount dummy v-lock for mounting and powering off p-tap, to preserve warranty and also get battery info.

I talk with Red about this too. They said me that the V-Plate could be damaged if camera ask too much energy to the battery. i.e. If you conect the EVF, LCD and Wevi the battery could damage the V-plate.

Guys
You can check out the Nucomm product line, supports HD-SDI at all frame rates, 4/2/2 encoding, PAL and NTSC DS, uses MW technology with a COFDM receiver, will go around corners, through walls, etc. We use them on our news vans for the Sony cameras. Very nice units. I bit higher price point than what your talking here, but if you need them, you need them and I would suggest renting for the shoot.

This will let you go out about 500 meters from the receive location, we have gone as far as 1000 meters a few times. Is perfect for event shooting in which you cannot run SDI cables all over the place.

I went with the IDX system and it has worked flawless on the last two productions. It cuts out when running over 50ft away through walls (camera exterior but village is interior), but you can just run a BNC to extend the receiver outside or just closer to the camera. Quality of the transmission is fantastic.

Only gripes are size and quality of plastic used. Its nice and lightweight but feels cheap. The size is likely an advantage though over antenna systems once you mount a large antenna, especially for steadicam work. I used a RED side handle and a plate from ET with RED screw spacing and mounted a Vmount plate onto it and powered by Ptap. It helps balance when EVF is used.

Also, in my testing, I have discovered that it only works flawlessly in 23.98 or 29.97 Framerate setting. I am shooting internationally and they do a lot of 25 Framerate settings, so this is unfortunate. Basically the problem it runs into is an upwards scrolling image on your monitor. The signal is clear, but constantly scrolling.

If someone knows of this problem and has a solution, please let me know.

Don't have solution but I have the same issue here on the feature I am currently Supervising.

In 24fps and 25fps project time bases the RED's HD-SDI preview output is not 720p 59.94Hz but 720p 60Hz, which the Camwave does not like, resulting in the scrolling SDI output (looks like rolling analogue video).

My fix is to run 720p 50Hz instead.

Jonathan's answer is the answer, and it works perfectly. If you are shooting 25fps, then the refresh on the Monitoring output needs to be changed from 59.97i to 50i. Then the scrolling ceases. I don't have a camera handy to go through where this is in the menus, but I recall it in within the System Menu.

Looking at the possibility of a wireless system. After reading this thread- I see there some options out there. After a year's time, I am wondering if anyone knows of any newer options out there- under $6k?

Don't know the price - but recently saw announce of transvideo hd-wireless set. Did anybody have the experience with it?

Hey Jason, I have been testing the Teradek Cube for some time now and it works quite nicely. If you can live with the delay of 300 miliseconds you would be pleasantly surprised with its performance. I've tested it to 300 feet line of site and at least 140 feet through an office building with no problems. I have also been experimenting with settings in VLC. The recording program that is used. In there you can set up the look of what is coming through. It has image adjustment settings. So set bars on the camera and dial in your monitor. The Cube is only a couple thousand dollars and it will transmit 1080p. Www.Teradek.com

In all of the discussed systems, are you able to monitor the metadata (except battery info)? I assume you can send whatever info you want out the HD SDI, but I'm not a Red owner. I've used the original Red One a few times, but can't recall what gets passed through the HD SDI out.

Basically, I'm planning to use an MX and the DP and Director want to be able to view the waveform/histogram info as well as all of the other stuff (frame rate, ISO, etc).

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks
Ben

I find the IDX to be way to sensitive to the environment you are shooting in - NOT a "robust" system.

IMO - you should look at TWO options -

1) Teredek

2) BOXX for the very high-end that demands zero frame delay with audio + all SDI RP188 meta data.

Teredek is under $2000, BOXX is about $15,500 for a transmitter + receiver

Don't forget the Transvideo HD Titan, same options as the BOXX a bit cheaper, (10,000 eur) working very good for me for over 100 days now. 5.8 gHZ, no problems with remote focus, telephones, etectera.
