So I'm building my web-site and I wanted to know if anybody could recommend some good hosts? Looking for FTP access, pretty big storage for putting up my demo reel, photos, music etc. Decent bandwidth. Any suggestions?

I've been looking at PowWeb.com.

We've used various in 4 different businesses with lots of hosting needs, and Rackspace is absolutely the bomb. They say "fanatical support" and they mean it. Never had a single hiccup, have 2 boxes with them, one Linux one Winders. They cost a bit more but are badass.

Depends on what you need. I like Apple Mobileme, easy to use and inexpensive. Pay 158 euro per year: 60 GB disk space plus 600 GB monthly traffic volume. Bandwidth is mostly ok. You can forward one personal domain to your mobileme account/website.

This is my mobileme-website, quite simple but enough for my needs:

www.hd4.tv

Dreamhost has unlimited bandwidth and storage is easy to setup and use, great service, not very expensive. If your looking for something more powerful look at media temple.

Also, you don't need to host all your elements in one place. For instance you could host your videos and photos at a site such as SumgMug. Then you can embed that content in your main site. Also, some of these services support a secondary URL such as photos.mydomain.com.

This is esp. useful if you are hosting a lot of client images or update the media content a lot while leaving the main site design the same. The upload and management tools for media on a photo/vid site such as SmugMug are much nicer than vanilla FTP etc.

I mention SmugMug because that is what I use. But, that is not the only option. Just the one I am familiar with. The advantage of a site like this is you are getting a lot of management and other media tools made available. Also, they already have useful notions such as galleries and tags. To build this on your own site takes a lot more work.

See this for an example of what I mean: http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/

I use Dreamhost too... I host 7+ (some doubled just for redirection) domains with them and have only one ftp account, I don't use FTP that much.

But for me, their numbers look more like fabrications than actual truth.

I wonder what will happen to my account if I ever reach the limit they say I have.

Probably gonna take down my account and everything...
