  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good Surf/Water Housing Unit for the DSCM 2 camera body + wide angle lens

Are there any solid(semi affordable), surf/water housing units you guys recommend for the DSCM2 body type? Kind of freaks me out putting my Camera in the water with this guy(http://saltysurfhousings.com/red-dsmc2-camera-housing/). I don't need to go more than 10 feet under water, but I'll be in semi heavy surf, so I'll need to make sure the camera is protected. Needs to fit my Red Epic Weapon + wide angle(canon 11-24 or equivelent) lens.


Any body used it with the Epic Weapon DSCM2? Let me know!

Our PVC version is relatively lightweight because the lead weight that makes it neutrally buoyant for diving is easily removable for surface, surf, etc. use. Price is around $4500-$5,000 depending on exact configuration.

I have one for my Epic W and it's awesome. Definitely the industry standard. To get the smallest possible setup have Sean custom make a setup for you for this camera setup:
- Epic W camera body
- Wooden Camera battery plate in the "low" position" https://www.woodencamera.com/cable-less-v-mount-blueshape-weapon-p/220700.htm
- Paglink battery

I opted not to get the port for my 11-24 (yet) because the lens is so damn heavy. The 8-15 and 11-16 are just so much lighter. You can choose between the higher or lower capacity Pag batteries to adjust weight depending on what your shoot session looks like.

Apologies if I'm pushing my housing too much, but it is a true dive housing as well (just add the included ballast weight) and is rated to 175 feet standard.

Another thing to note about these dedicated surf housings is that design can be a bit cumbersome to reload mags and batteries since you have to completely remove the camera (and those screws take a bit of time)

Ours you simply open the backplate with the quick release clamps and reach in to swap battery and mag.

Hey Michael--how much does your housing weigh (with say, a 6" dome port)? Do you have photos of the rear quick release system you mention? Is there some kind of safety to keep them from opening when you're getting your ass kicked by a wave?
 
Whilst the wingnut system does take a little bit longer than quick-release clips, I definitely feel more confident that the housing is properly sealed and won't be accidentally opened when getting pounded in the water.

With my Salty setup you can even have one wingnut completely off and still maintain a solid seal on the main o-ring. Aka 'contingency'.

I can have the housing opened, new battery and/or mag installed, and closed again within a minute.

Although, there is no denying that the quick-release clips have their place, and some people will prefer them.
