I wanted to find out everyone's opinion on the following field monitors:

1. Panasonic BT-LH1710 - 17" ($2,849.00)
2. Flanders Scientific LM-1770 - 17" ($2,695.00)
3. Other Brands/Monitors

Interested in pro/cons, mainly used for field applications with RED.

I see a lot of people: DPs, VTR guys, DITs, with the Panasonic monitors. However WHEN I can purchase another one I'll be getting the 1770 FSI monitor.

I actually got a personal demo from co-founder Dan Desmet recently. I already own the 7" monitor they sell, and am very happy with the features. Aside from the lower price which is always attractive, they have constant updates and great, US-based support out of their Atlanta HQ. The latest update I did to my monitor, which I believe is available for all of them, included the added function of user-defined marker lines, pretty trick! And they have great built-in scopes as well.

The 1770 is REALLY lightweight and is the only larger monitor they offer that's 12v. Like I said, I'll be picking one up ASAP.

Hi there,

I use the Flanders 17". It's lightweight and holds power for a long time on a V-lock battery, picture looks really good. BUT - it lags about 2 frames, which makes some directors unhappy when making sync to music.

You know what really is a great monitor? The Carrion. Boy, nothing can touch it. It's so good, it doesn't exist. Even if you buy one, you won't get it. It's that good. It's so good, people are willing to actually wait years to get one, and then, they still don't get it. All they get is more room in their wallet. What a great product. And customer service? They wrote the book on that.

My advice, if you want a monitor that is not only technically unmatched, but a complete hose-job, go for the Carrion. Or you could just put your money in the bathroom sink and set fire to it.

The Panny is the standard for field monitoring.
I use Dell 24" DVI's for Client monitoring. And a Plasma if really needed. Really really needed. I also like going with a larger manufacturer so repairs and parts are easier to get while traveling.

"Fast mode"?? Didn't know it existed. I will try it out on tonights shoot. Wonder why it's not a factory preset

LOL! That's one of the funniest posts in a long time. Also one of the saddest. That guys Luis Siniarch should get some love from this guy: :costumed-smiley-047

Less processing time = lower quality image. Sony monitors have this adjustment as well.

Its in the Video > Processing menu.

Hi Mitch,
Dan from FSI demoed the function it to me, and said very clearly that in Fast mode there was no degredation of the video signal display. However there is a delay induced and a loss of quality with the ancilliary functions like waveform/vectorscope, audio levels, etc. His demonstration appeared to back-up that claim. So I would say it is probably not like the Sony in this regard.

Then I stand corrected. Apologies to Flanders.

I've just purchased an 8" and 17" TV logic monitors, having used them for the first time yesterday on a phantom shoot I can say they are very good value for money, the 17" looked as good as the Panasonic that was also being used.
