  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We wrapped up work early on a Friday afternoon and decided to hit the driving range to test out the new RED Scarlet-X firmware build 3.2.8 with 1K HD 89fps and 1K WS 120fps frame rates enabled.
This is a mixture of 4K 30fps, 3K 48fps, 2K 60fps, and 1K 89-120fps footage, and is pretty easy to tell the 1K shots from the 4K, but it's definitely still a nice addition and a useful feature for certain situations. Target REDCODE was set to 3:1 at 1K HD and adjusted to as high as 7:1 at 4K to as the SSD speeds would allow.
Shot on:
RED Scarlet-X
Rokinon 8mm, 14mm, and 35mm Canon mount primes
Sigma 20mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.4 EF mount primes.
Cinevate Atlas 30 LTS

Where's the liquid? Everyone knows that high-speed tests are only to be done with liquid. :emote_whack:

Nice and a great way to show off the various framerates.

Looks great! I think the 1K shots cut fine...especially for a web piece...On Vimeo/Youtube it's so easy to forgive these kind of shots, cuz we're so used to compression on net anway.

That's why these new frame rates are so useful.

Very nice.

Thanks!

Yeah I'm honestly pretty impressed that even when sampling the sensor so drastically down to 1K the quality still holds up quite well. Obviously it's not a format that I would want to shoot a feature or high end commercial with, but it's quite good for web delivery. :)

Honestly, I think that 1K HD looks an awful lot like a Canon 5D Mark III in 1920x1080 in terms of detail, artifacts, etc. It needs some Neat Video loving to look right and it has its limitations, but as a little trick to use now and then for slow motion on web content goes it's great. Not a primary reason to buy the camera, perhaps, but a good thing to have.

what is the pixel count for the new frame rates? the 89fps is 720hd, correct? what aspect ratio/how many pixels is for WS 1k? I am trying to look this up for my DP but considering the firmware thread has 38 pages i figured it'll be faster to just ask you guys...thanks!!!

The exact specs are...

1K HD = 1-89fps at 1280x720 (16:9 aspect ratio)
1K WS = 1-120fps at 1280x480 (2.66:1 aspect ratio)

thanks man!!!

It would be coo
If someone could do a side by side test with 3k and 1khd at the same shutter speed and then slowing down the 3k with optical flow or twixtor. It seems to me from the tests I've seen that optical flow needs a shutter speed faster than your slowed frame rate to work effectively so it has some time between frames to create the new motion. I wonder if only doing half the speed of 3k if you wouldn't get better quality than going down to 1k.
