I'm trying to figure if GlueTools and Crimson would would be totally transparent for QT DPX / conform worflow (including audio) with FCP, REDCINE and COLOR.

The two apps seems very well made.
Just want to be sure before buying these apps.

thanks

crimson is the defacto mac/fcp standard......and Mr. Gluetools and Mr. Crimson are going to have a date.

i would add automatic duck and Aftereffects+ some Red giant plugins into this Combo....then you have a real indy workflow.

That would be great really.
It'd save me so much time.

thanks

This is the workflow that I'm thinking of for my FCP editor. I don't have either products yet so I can't be sure. Waiting for someone else to post a step-by-step process of a successful solution....

EDIT: oh yeah. He wants to do a "one-light" in RedCine to start, and Color for final step before output, (no going back to FCP) and no need for the Duck.

Kaya, are you on Gluetools yet?

I have an Duck lisence, but it's the wrong breed...

i am deciding between purchaising a speedgrade or a set of primes right now....

but things change so fast...and the next 6 months will be exciting...

so maybe i will wait a little and ride the crimson+gluetools horse for the next 6 months...

--why dont you like the duck?

Both are downloadable as demos.

For now, I have to drag the DPXs manually into fcp (one pr clip) but either I have misundersood something (likely) or this will be fixed soon.

Ians tools is a must-have for dpx workflow. So is gluetools. I thought the AJA thingy did the same thing - more or less. I was wrong. (and Sanjin disagrees with me... :) thus: your milage may vary)

Step by step?
Cut from proxies (Compressor or camera-made)
Export sequence as xml
Open XML in Crimson
Match clips
export RC xml OR just render the DPXs directly in RL. If your clips are good fr the RL way, you save A LOT of time...

Export DPXs to separate folders

Drag 1st dpx from each folder into FCP
Export EDL
Open EDL in Color, SET PROJECT FRAMERATE RIGHT :)
Point to the master folder containing the DPXs
CC at your hearts content

The BIG upside with gluetools over AJA is twofold:
You can render/export master in FCP without loosing bit-depth (titles etc)
The DPXs behave totally different in color, and in a very good way

makes sense?

But test it!

I like the Duck. It's just that my Duck (Donald) is for AVID imports exports, not AE...
Have gone some to/from avid, actually onlining the HD things in FCP...
But that's the past :)

What lenses? And how much does speedgrade cost?

AND I've been in berlin a bunch of times. Fancy a beer during the summer?

Remember NOT to rename files, and have your whole project within one separate master catalogue...

EDIT: RTFM!

You can batch import the clips from the import menu in FCP
(Even some more hours saved...)

speedgrade is also modular....but not in features...its crippled on output

here is a link
http://www.iridas.com/products/

http://www.speedgrade.com/xr/
xr is 15 k €

HS Zeiss, i am not a lens guru, a close AC friend is a lens geek, and he will present me in a week or so different sets in different prices and conditions, new and old ones....

then its the old calculating thing....what is cheaper: to buy or rent...

i have to admit its seductive to own stuff, but the rental fee are so low here...
next time in Berlin drop me a call...

K. Can you explain more about the crippled in output part for the speed grade.

Thing is that you cannot have the SDI output for monitoring adnd tape playout on the MAC, as it's based on quadroFX (Like shake)

I was wondering if it might be a good idea to build a Linux BOX for this system.

AFAIK noone here has reported on the quadro under bootcamp on a MacPro...

but i wouldnt forget red itself...maybe they will introduce a 4k redcode 444...,
or Cineform is doing something cool (they showed something cool at NAB)

exciting times

I also like Gluetools and purchased it for our facility over a year ago. We use it to accomplish a number of things, with great results. However...

I don't understand why you need it with the workflow you're describing. If you simply use Crimson's tools to get the DPX's made, and render them to separate folders with the original timecodes and original clip names, along with using the time code as the file numbers, then take the original EDL into Color, the DPX's will link just fine (I've tested this numerous times). When you render from Color, export an XML to reopen in Final Cut, if you're doing this for an ultimately video based delivery. Why exactly do you need Glue Tools to accomplish this?

Thanks...

I don't :)

I need it for 2 more things...

Delivering DPXs from FCP, and keeping stuff 10 bit in FCP.
Makes sense?

Also I've seen some results I didn't expect, over which I am only pondering... They're only, good, though and happened after gluetools were installed.

Makes not sense, I know...

EDIT:
OK, I spill my beans and stupidity...
The DPXs I get after installing gluetools just "work better"
Less noise, more of everything which is fun.

Not explaianble, but I'm sitting here and A/B'ing with previous exports of the same takes, and it aint the same.

I do not claim that this should make sense!
But I am sure happy...

Yes. Gluetools cheats FCP, that's the fun part.
Of course it depends on what FX and render settings you do in FCP.

but if you use coremelts plug ins + set the render tab to high precision...will the effects not have an impact to the cheating?

i thought best way is to add the effects in After effects...to keep 10 bit rgb

can you break it down for me....how to get 10 bit rgb files (including effects) out of fcp?
