  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Globalmediapro RED batteries not communicating % to SCARLET

Here are the results on my SCARLET (should be identical with EPICs):

The Switronix plate passes on data perfectly. Even with it the Globalmediapro batteries still just show voltage (the display reads "DC"). The Switronix batteries, on the other hand, correctly show percentage ("BRICK."). Neither battery shows % with the Viewfactor APU plate (as it does not pass on data).

Switronix Plate
Switronix Batteries

Advantages and disadvantages to each setup: the Globalmediapro batteries don't pass on %, but they are cheap. The Switronix batteries pass on % but are more $ and the 95W/h battery is about the same size as the 160W/h GMP. The Viewfactor plate fits directly to the back of the DSMC (albeit a bit tightly, and longer cables are not yet available). Switronix plate doesn't mount directly to the back of a DSMC (needs a RED Cradle, RED Quickplate, or the new Wooden QB + plate). Plenty of options!

Shot a short/test today with DP Timur Civan on the Viewfactor/GMP setup and while we didn't have rods or a side handle, we still managed to make do. Pretty compact system even with a full size brick on the back. Footage soon...

Jason, I got the two channel GMP charger and then two of the mini travel chargers (figure that way I have flexibility to travel light, instead of one big honking 4-channel charger).

Thanks for the post Ryan. Very helpful. We just bought eight GMP batteries and four chargers for two Scarlets.

I'd love to hear how you end up configuring your camera for handheld / sticks. I haven't seen any rigs I'm in love with. Bought the O-Box and O-Grips... and plan to rig the v-mount batteries on the back of the rails to use as counterweight... but beyond that, we're still investigating options.

Hi Folks,
Maybe a stupid question. You can use RED Bricks on the Switronix mount and see percentage?
thanks
Sam

I have a Switronix plate and a Global Media Pro v-mount and I get the % just fine with my Scarlet.

I just (back)ordered Ryan's QR Backplate solution which includes the Switronix Plate. I'm thinking of buying into 90wh batteries to keep the rig lightweight and insure fly-ability. Is there a 90wh unit that is known to pass data to the Reds? Most of the Red Specific models seem to be high WH rated.

Not from GMP. Here is a list of the batteries they have that will pass the % to RED cameras: http://www.globalmediapro.com/dc/CA...nt-V-Lock/Batteries-for-Red-Camera/?brandId=1

Switronix offers the XP-L95RED. 95wh, good for air travel and passes data to the Red cams. You can get them at any of our dealers.

Im not following. Is it these batterys that have the problem or the batteryplate?

Refer to post #488 re: Viewfactor plate.

Exactly - it will not show battery percentage since the plate isn't built with that ability in mind.

The cameras like to run above 12.0v. When your camera gets down to the ~12v range, it's time to start thinking about a change. The "Input voltage out of range." warning will fire up around 11.5v depending on the current [and voltage consistency] of the battery.

Voltage is what I've always used to judge a battery with the R1 and Epic. I prefer it as the most consistent and realistic "no BS" answer to what's going on with the power. The great news is that the Epic and Scarlet last for *ages* on even a small onboard battery. Just wait for the voltage indicator to get around 12.0v and change!

The VF plates aren't wired to pass battery data. Their are 2 micro pins on the 1B connectors which must be wired to pass data to Epic/Scarlet cams. Switronix plates are wired entirely, so they do pass data.
