With coming technology like occulus rift and 4K high resolution OLED's it will be much easier to watch 3D. VR-technology will bloom more and more and 3D is a standard part of it so 3D stereo is not dead, the hype is just over, but it's not dead. 3D is bigger then just your usual hollywood blockbuster, it's a way to view content, both games, films, TV and even browsing.

Whenever a technology becomes easy to use, it's exploding. Touch screens was around long before the iphone or ipad, but it was the ease of use that made it happen on a large scale. Glass-free 3D is the key moment that 3D will explode as content viewing, there's no question about that.

Why do 3D detractors think it is remotely productive to make uniformed comments about 3D being "dead"? While it is undeniable that the hype surrounding the commercial exploitation of 3D from 2010 - 2012 was way over the top, 3D as an artistic medium will never die. Even I, one of 3D greatest advocates, found it hard to imagine the technology becoming as mainstream as monoscopic motion picture entertainment. But, the digital 3D revolution brought with it many advances that are here now and just won't go away. Fact is, many many people own 3D TVs and many many cinemas can project films in 3D. If somebody makes a good one (Gravity) people seem to want to see it. It is simply antagonistic and nothing else to do the drive by "I hate 3D" posting without providing any useful insight or thoughtful information. 3D is far from dead. We have seen many poorly executed examples of 3D. I have personally been involved in many 3D productions that have been damaged by the narrow minded viewpoint expressed by those who simply "hate" 3D and want to destroy it. Do everyone a favor and just FO (fall out) if you hate it. Just don't watch it if you don't like it, and please for the sake of everyone, don't be involved in making it if you don't have a passion for it, you will never succeed at it and you will do nothing to advance it as an art form.

I don't hate 3d, we had a lot of fun with 3d while it lasted, both with production and post conversion. We did quite a bit of 3d post including the conversion of 2001 and still love watching it on the worlds largest IMAX screen when we are up for it. I was just saying that it's dead as a business and that the last stereo push is fading out as far as audience members are concerned. I bet it will be back in 20 years or so as it seems to be on a cycle. I'm sure there will always be a small group of dedicated followers/hobbyist that will keep the mad scientist types playing around with two cameras glued to a 2 x 4. The stereo rides at theme parks and a few other 3-D gimmick's will continue to keep the "art form" alive but the hope of glasses free auto stereo helping to keep the 3D industry going is a fantasy. And yes it's true that there are now millions of 3d capable TVs out in the world it's also true that less than 10% (way less) of those consumers have ever watched 3-D on them even once. Also the number of 3d cinema screens retracted in 2013 after 5 years of growth and 2014 will see even more 3d screens disappear.

Last weeks news of Pace shutting down and selling all their gear to VER was shocking to me only because I thought they went out of business over a year ago when Cameron decided to shoot Avatar 2 with traditional single camera set ups.

Real D's 3 year stock chart looks like a black diamond ski slope, do you think the depressed stock price is an opportunity?

Don't neglect 2D -> S3D conversion technology. It can even come to surprise you ;-)

I just confirmed today that Avatar 2 and 3 are currently NOT planning to shoot in 2D with a single camera, but rather to shoot native 3D. So I say again, those who are uninformed and seek only to spew negativity with no real information or useful input, please refrain.
