So I was going to pick up a red epic Dragon but then decided to do the scarlet Dragon for now use it for a few weddings over the fall/winter and then sell it and purchase an epic. As I just wanted to use the Scarlet to get more of a feeling to learn to red better. So I shot a wedding almost completely on the red. Other than some other minor detail shots. I love how the red has the black shading ability so that I don't have to spend extensive amount of time correcting the shadows and color correcting. The dynamic range of the camera is just purely amazing. At first I was new to the footage and didn't understand it but now I've come to realize how to set exposure for highlights and out to utilize the footage and it's just plain amazing. And with the lowlight optimizer if it gets too dark at a reception I can just swap it in. So here is a snap from my outdoor B roll shot.I will post a video on here when it's done as well as some other shots but I just figured I would share this. I am very happy to be shooting RED.

Well, if I had to carry a bulky camera, it sure wouldn't be a DSLR or MFD. I have shot a couple of weddings (as actual jobs). Now, I'm no expert, but I'd say the Dragon would be the far superior choice if you wanted to carry a large camera. And the Dragon can be cheaper than a Phase One or Hasselblad.

Of course a lot of wedding photographers use Leicas (35mm and digital). The CCD in the M9 is particularly wonderful, much nicer than the CMOS in the current M. So perhaps I might choose the Leica over the RED, but here's the thing: with the RED, you could potentially never miss a shot. And it's all done in silence. That's food for thought.

I agree. Completely. I was actually shooting video for this wedding. I am going to be moving to the epic soon as I don't like the compression artifacts on 4k ws 72 fps it's @ 13:1 or 16:1 and its just too much. Would like to be able to get 8:1 on slow mo. So epic hwre I come.

Congrats on your upgrade.

Seems like you have the wrong idea of what black shading does not the camera. It's main function is to tell the camera what is pure black at the current temperature and exposure time, in order to reduce noise. Doesn't really to too much in terms of color grading blacks and shadows other than giving you less noise to get rid of.
