  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GH4 as B Cam

I don't really like the 8-bit 4:2:0 codec in the GH4, but am reasonably happy with the 10-bit 4:2:2 signal it hands out to my Atomos Shogun. That said, when you add up the extra expense of the external recording solution, and its ergonomic disadvantages, the RED RAVEN starts to look really, really attractive.

I had high hopes for Panasonic's VLog-L, but it's basically useless without the Shogun. And I've found it to be not terribly useful with the Shogun, either. I use Cine-D plus the Leeming LUT (v1.26).

The places you'll find the GH4 really disagrees with RED cameras is when you have strongly colored (stage) lights. With super-saturated sources, each camera goes into its own little world.

works great for studio work, I would recommend A7sii for another option as well!!! Great camera even works well with my DRAGON too

absolutely works. Personally, I spent a bit of time creating a custom preset for the GH4 that could match the basic colour output of the RED. Flattening sharpness and colours a little. They match pretty well with some diligence.
Here is an example of the two together in an interview setting. Feel free to pick which is which.

all is good until the gh4 falls off a cliff.... so expose carefully / conservitvely

once outside it's swet spot the gh4 is utter crap where your red camera will not even breath hard... so yea, as long as you have control and use it wisely, sure...

really hard to save a gh4 shot on a bad day... involves dumbing down the red shots untill they are bad enough to match

i have the been there / done that tshirt in this file.... i do advice DP's to not go there if there's any other option

It works fine and is a good match when paired with the Metabones Speed Booster, which gives you the ability to use a single lens set with both cameras (EF in my case).

As Michael alluded to above, if you set up the GH4 with the proper settings and use the technical LUT I created to match Rec709 exactly, you will have a very good starting point to match both cameras in post.

Here's a thread with more info on what I've been doing on the GH4 side with my LUT:
