  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Getting a Slider

Dennis - Does the Atlas support a Mitchell/150 head? Also does it have dampening adjustment and quiet (silent) ball bearings? I'd be interested to hear a sound clip at full speed.

It looks like it can only be mounted with a tripod type setup. Is there an option for dolly mounting (basically a Mitchell base for the system)? A lot of these get used on Fishers and Chapmans for extended dolly movements and ease of setup.

Atlas tested out quieter than the $7000 dollar over-keeper (conventional steel rail with Mitchell mounts) we had here. The CBC shooter from Toronto who had rented that unit purchased his own Atlas literally on the spot after using it for one day. Atlas does have steel bearings and steel rods though so it's not silent by any stretch. What is very quiet is Atlas with our composite bearings swapped in...but it's not as smooth. The commercial we shot with the unit actually shows those bearings installed.

Atlas does support both 100mm and 150mm bowls, and we can machine anything so if you have particular needs just call us. Sending us the desired "integration part" for a week or so will guarantee fitment. If we assess market demand, your requested part will end up part of our catalog :-) With respect to the Mitchell mount request, we have an add-on component coming (January) with 3 of the 100mm mount locations that is designed to affix to any Atlas (or the smaller Pegasus) systems. It will limit travel though to about 3 1/2 feet. The system integrates to the the current rails support components and will take about 3 minutes to swap on/off. Our Ballare dolly is also getting a steel 100mm Mitchel mount option.

Btw, if you have one of the Atlas units and you're seeing resistance at the start and stop of your movements, call us! We identified a .010" variance on our new blocks (with adjustable legs) which can be addressed with a block swap, or about 2 minutes of effort at your end.

Has anyone had a chance to play with the Overachiever slider?

I've never heard of it before (who makes it?) but I just played with one and it seemed very well built, quite nice. However it used powerful magnets with reversed polarity to slow it down instead of a hard stop or springs which seems like a bad idea when it comes to digital cameras or magnetic media but maybe not.

I still prefer the Griptech but I would put this one in the top 3 that I've seen so far.

Mechanically and operationally, the ronford sliders are faultless. A piece of kit you can rely on whatever the conditions. Solid build, fantastic finish, they can take a massive payload or the smallest set up. As with everything they do, it will last a life time.

The choke factor on the sticker price for the Ronford Slider is the only thing holding them back from having many more units out in the world. If I didn't care about the 10K I'd have to drop to own one, I'd definitely be using it.
