  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

George Lucas: 1983 vs. 2005

...

I am of course a fan of Star Wars, but my favorite Lucas film is THX-1138, because the story and the acting were amazing, and I don't think anything he has made since has come close in this regard. By far is most connected, personal and emotional film. I also think as a film he allowed his audience to feel the pain of the characters and therefore be very invested in the film.

Would have been nice if he could've just left the thing alone, too. The added tinting and backdrops in the "updated" version are nice, but where the hell are the midgets? I want my midgets, not these crappy CGI beasty things.

Wow, I now feel lucky that I haven't seen the "updated" version... didn't know there was one. Thanks for the heads up.

Certainly not a good way of NOT drawing attention to FX:

Adding them after everybody has seen the movie...

ah com'on Miguel....I know you have a "make easy button" to do all your vfx work....we all have one...its called "press button to make bad coffee"

believe me dude we have the same bad coffee button here....i think it goes with the
vfx territory

Finally something I can agree with:

"The Original Trilogy looked like a lived-in, functional world that could exist; the Prequel Trilogy had a much cleaner, glossy look that I think for most translated into more of a "video game look", and the overdose of CG elements helped that."

Hate that video game look, and it is usually the product of virtual reality worlds created in computers. "Hate" is not too strong a word.

If that makes me a CG "hater", so be it.

90% of everything is crap. Including CG animation. Deal with it.

Guys, stop the personal attacks...

Miguel, this wouldnt fly at CGtalk would it. No need to get personal. Lets play nice now..

Ours is excellent... although it's automatic so I guess we don't have to push a button. :D

Hard to believe so many smart people like yourselves get lost in the myriad details when it comes to judging Star Wars' movies value...Bad dialog, woody performances, didnt feel real etc... Look at the big picture, Lukas is using the medium to pass a message to Americans... About how to loose a Republic, how those in power pulling the strings on both sides to justify the end. For this alone Star Wars 1-3 deserves a big merit. Original Star Wars were kid's movies comparing to last ones.

Nobody here is discussing the political or social intentions of the films.

Well I must say that I listened to George Lucas explain the prequels in an interview and after 20 minutes of George Lucas explaining what I was supposed to see I was really disappointed by what could have been. His concept was actually really good, his thematic points were excellent, his arc was well thought out. The writing and execution was just lacking. And after watching the IMAX Attack of the Clones cut I was even more dissapointed. The IMAX cut is actually pretty good. The pacing was much better, the story better articulated and overall was a much better movie 15 minutes shorter.

The photo is FUD. The last 3 Star Wars films had more physical models made for them so the 2nd "green-screen" shot of lucas could have a real room full of prequel models just as cool as the first photo of OT toys. What you are really comparing is optical mattes Vs Greensreen digital mattes as that was the only thing that really changed between trilogies. Millions were spent on real sets even if most think the last 3 films were shot 100% on green stages. I enjoy ILM's work even when it was sloppy (Indy 3!). I'll take todays digital compositing tools Vs the 1977-83 black mask hand rotoscoping around the models...

Well, now one person is.

The last 3 movies were awful. Period. And due to whose fault? George Lucas`, of course! ILM can`t be the weak link as they did legendary things on T2, Jurassic Park and so on.

Lucas at best had better only produced those mind numbing flicks. He did that on the second and third films, that were the best of all. At that time he had limited capabilities in terms of technology etc. and squeezed the last bit of it - now he had all the money and all gadgetry and sank the boat instead of just rocking it...

Lucas has lost it....not only as a director but as a script writer and story teller as well...heck even the new Indiana Jones was a huge disappointment (yes I know he didn't directed it but he was heavily involved in the story/script/production)

I'm impressed no one brought up Jar Jar Binks yet.
Reduser, you really have more restraint that I thought.
