Hi All,

A friend of mine who works at a rental place is trying to unload a Genustech wide angle matte box set up for 15mm light weight rods at a fraction of it's original price. Under $200.00. He says it just takes up space and it has never been rented. Even though it has 2 4x4 stages I don't actually use filters when shooting unless forced to and would just use it as a lens shade. What are your thoughts on this company and their products? I have no knowledge of them but the item seems sturdy and is in like new condition. For a glorified lens shade it appears sufficient at the price it is being offered for.

Any thoughts?

Hi William,

that Kit is offered new for 169.- at BH right now. If you´d use the filter-stages, OK, but just as a lens shade? It is a wideangle box and can only carry a top french flag and the mounting of this piece is not well engineered. It will wear out pretty soon, at least ours did. You would need a donut or rings for your lenses, all will add up. Is there a follow focus included as well? If not, I´d pass on that. There is a reason, why it never rented.
We use a chrosziel now and the difference is groundbreaking.

Cheers, Ulf

Hi Ulf,

That was exactly the sort of feedback I was hoping for. I'm looking for an inexpensive basic solution but not a piece of junk either.

That said, do you or anyone else have a budget conscious solution for a lens shade? As primarily a studio shooter, a C stand and flag work fine but can be a bit cumbersome when the camera needs to be more mobile. The Chrosziel at b&h is listed for over $2000. I bit more that I had planned to spend for a lens shade.

Thanks,

Bill

Look at kamerar matte box. Had to get that one after I got too many clients expecting me to offer my BT ViV MB as addon on my rental kit. Kamerar MB works perfect as lens shade and it carries top and side flags, built like a tank and has survived multiple and extreme abuses but it does pack a bit of weight.

I have a Movcam MM2 and like it a lot. It has a swing arm and two 4 x 5.65 holders. One rotating.
Under a grand.

Not sure if some of these guys even read what you asked for but to be recommending an O box (hella expensive for a sun shade) or Genustech (which was in the title) is a bit strange.

Check that out at 6.48. that should do you fine i gather. (I'm not the reviewer)
