Have you guys seen this?

http://www.newsshooter.com/2015/09/...s-adapter-with-built-in-electronic-nd-filter/

Genus is coming out with an electronic, variable ND...which sounds a lot like what Sony is also including in the FS5.

And both sound quite similar in functionality to a Motion Mount (minus the global shutter).

It doesn't surprise me several years after releasing Motion Mount, the market is starting to emerge with affordable solutions that have similar functionality...

Does anyone know the intellectual ramifications of this?

Is this new tech, inspired tech, or even partially borrowed tech?

I personally have no clue, but never ceases to amaze me how often RED inspires the market place...

I saw that, and wondered the same thing Is this the same way the motion mount works? Does it have a LCD in it that darkens?
Ive looked at it in the store and it really doesn't explain how it work.
Thanks,
Tim

I dream of a 4x5.6 filter with this tech in it. Infinitely adjustabe ND regulardless of camera or lens.

Tiffen has a 4x5.65 Rota Pola which has 2mm rotating Circular and 2mm fixed Linear polarizers stacked together to create a Variable ND that fits in a standard Arri matte box 4x5.65 filter stage.

thanks for this. Have you used it? How's the color accuracy at different strengths? Did you notice any patterns or giant x on wide lenses?

Didn't Red just buy the Tessive filter tech? So, I wouldn't say that Red is leading this market.

And Philip, the Tessive Time filter started out as exactly what you're asking for, although I'm not sure if Red added the ND settings or if they were originally available.

It appears that the product was discontinued when Red bought the technology. I'm only speculating based on the timing of the discontinuation and the fact that the motion mount has exactly the same technology as the Tessive filter, though. So don't quote me on any of this.

I do wish that the standard sized filter with this tech was still available for use on other rolling shutter cameras. But, then I suppose that's why Red snatched it up and made it only available on Reds. But, I'm going way off topic.

I think RED's aggressive acquisition of Tessive several years ago was still part of an active desire to champion new tech...that was years ahead of it's time. Their foresight and forward thinking was still present during the acquisition...as far as I'm concerned...

It's brand new, I only played with it at Cinegear this year so no idea how well it works ion the real world. Looks like you can expect similar results to the Letus and Revar Cine systems, flipping the 4x5.65 filter creates the same cool/warm color shift effect. The Tiffen guy mentioned that the Pola is mid-efficiency, so not as strong of an effect as an Ultra Pol. I would mostly worry about the long term robustness of the 2mm filters in the field.
