I'm about to begin shooting a piece on firespinners, in 3D on Epics. I did a test shoot last night - but found out, to my great dismay, that as soon as I put the cameras into HDR mode, I lost genlock.
I have the cameras set to 4kHD, 23.976 - and the Gen10 of course set to 1080p/23.976. Genlock works fine when not in HDR. I also have the cameras LAN connected, working properly (master / slave) - so there are no issues in terms of the 3D itself, just the genlock with HDR mode.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? I really was counting on being able to shoot this (and another specific project) in 3D with HDR. (And before you ask, I already did some tests with a single camera in HDR - before getting my second, so there was no genlock then - but despite the temporal displacement of the main and HDR tracks when shooting firespinners, it really did work well with some play in post! Detail in the fire instead of just a white hot blur...).
As a note, a second issue that I'm having - that someone at RED is apparently looking into - is that when I have the cameras genlocked with the above settings ... when I output via HD-SDI at 29.976 - no problem. But if I change the output frequency to 23.976 - I lose genlock... despite the fact that both the input and recording frequencies are set to this. Happens on both cameras, I'm assuming it would happen on yours as well.
Now this wouldn't be an issue if it didn't turn out that both the MC-100 and the Aja Hi5/3D I tried won't work with 29.976 and will work with 23.976. So I can either monitor or have genlock, not both. Mildly frustruating. :-\ But I can always align then switch back to shoot.
