Hello Red Users,

I am conducting market research on the plausibility of anamorphic lenses in the (mid range) cine market:

Would you purchase a 3 lens 2x squeeze super 35 coverage anamorphic set for $4000.00 to $5000.00 with image and build quality on par with Cooke and Zeiss anamorphics? (How do you feel about this price point?)

What t-stop do you shoot anamorphic lenses at? Is F3.2 acceptable for an anamorphic lens set if the image quality is excellent at max aperture?

Would you purchase a lens set (and be able to shoot) with solely the following focal lengths: 50mm / 65mm / 85mm?

Which mount is more compatible for your camera system: EF or PL?

What are your general thoughts on current anamorphic lenses being sold ie Atlas? How much would you like to spend for quality optics and what features do you want in new lenses?

Best,

Claud Andrew

Sadly I personally need a bit bigger set of lenses. a 3 lens set is restrictive. Although I will say that a great film that David Mamet directed with photography by Juan Anchia, "Things Change"
was shot only on a 40mm spherically.

I’m allmost done building a 3 lens sett, and ended up at 43mm, 77mm and 135mm ~f2.0 in PL. For me this is a set that will cover most situations, but I may add a couple more to the set at a later point.

Yes! However I think Academy 35mm coverage is a necessity for use on Gemini, Alexa ETC.

I could live with that stop for that price.

No. At least a 40mm would need to be available, even if it were at a higher price and sold separately from the other 3.

PL mount but if this is a ground up design then you should seriously think about a universal mount, that way the consumer can choose whichever mount works best

I have only seen prototype Atlas lenses and they looked gorgeous but I wanted to see a bit more resolution out of them, but again prototype. I could see spending as much as $6000 on a T3.5 40,50 and 85mm set of FRONT anamorphics as long as they maintained 4K minimum resolving power in the sweet spot and were built with proper, gears, marks and serviceable cinema grade mechanics.

Hi there:

Really intrigued by what "on par" means to you.

A $5k set vs. a $100k set...

Something's gotta give.

Cheers!

On par = Similar optical performance to industry leading anamorphics. At the same time better optical performance than Atlas or Kowas at max aperture.

If so, I'll buy a PL set with a 32/35mm, 50/65mm and 85/100mm.

keep us posted

That is a really competitive price for a set. If the quality is good there will be a market for it IMO.

For me I would like something like 36 to 135mm and a few in the middle. But maybe as a starting set something in the likes of a 40 to 100?
Having f3.2 is alright but better if it were real ~T3 or something a little brighter T2.5 maybe?

For me would be nice in a EF mount, but having a swappable mount would be better ( EF and PL).

Keep us updated if possible. Tnks

I'm definitely up for it. 40mm instead of 50mm would be great though. F/3.2 is fine too. For that price a lot of compromises could be done
