Bummer. . . I just called Gefen. . .

The new one is still in the R&D stage and probably won't be released until "the end of the year."

Nice , and did you ask about first 30 ft wireleess . Can i order it now ?
Don't want to make international calls :) Thanks.

My distributor is trying to hook me up with a demo of the Gefen unit. it's either that or I have to pay about $700 to buy it and then send it back if I don't like it. I'm going to wait for the verdict on the demo unit. Looks like $725 is common street price for the thing.

725 is normal price . i need to change topic.

Well, Jeff. . .I'm really anxious to know how it works.

I'm craving the longer range, but I just might be able to make do with 30'.

Unless, of course, 30' is really 15'. In which case, I'll just buy my focus-puller some binoculars and have him watch the DP's RED monitor from afar.

They claim:
"Real-time, visually lossless HD video compression"

however they also state...
"Up to 30 feet line-of-sight wireless operation with 65 Mbps throughput"

That is a fairly large reduction in a 1080p signal even for an 8-bit one (I doubt it supports 10-bit).
8bit@1920x1080@24fps=760Mbps.

760Mbps down to 65Mbps(Max)... visually lossless?!?... at an almost 88.5% data rate reduction that term may best be described as subjective. I believe I have the math right, let me know if I don't.

well red code 36 is 36 MB/sec ...
and uncompressed 4.5k is 968MB/sec....
thats 96% reduction....
and based on JPEG 2000....

So it seems that under $1000 won't cut it if you want to see the 720p the way that it comes out of the camera.

I was looking into renting one of the IDX CW-5HD modules which do 150' line of sight range and uncompressed 1080 and 720 HD-SDI.

But I looked at Red.com and I guess I was wrong about thinking R1 had a dual link option to see 1080p? So are we limited to 720? This is what is on Red.com under specs for the R1: "HD-SDI and HDMI preview including Look Around
1280×720 progressive, 1280×720 progressive, 4:2:2"

No you can get 1080 only on playback

OK, so only 720p 4:2:2

I guess the 720p would be very nice on a Panasonic 17" production monitor then. Or a JVC 24" if it upconverted the 720 to 1080 in the monitor.

But if you are going to get such a compressed image, then might as well watch it on a more affordable screen and save the money. I am only rambling aloud to hear what more experienced people would do...

It lools like question is not about experienced , question is about low cost work solution , that can help many Low budget productions . For me it will be solution for second camera , or even for Steadicam jobs.
Price 5500 For IDX CW-5HD , is very even for . For me better to put this money in lenses budget or some else thing that you need more that Super PlayBack solution .

Also 1 idea correct me if i am not right . I can not understand pullers working looking on monitor .
If you puller is really experienced person he even did not need to check focus on monitor.
For Director quality of image on play back monitor is not very important position . If director work with Film Cameras ,
for him HDMI compressed preview will be ideal playback picture.

Of course, I am just concerned with having the closest WYSIWYG on set experience for myself.

Anything wireless is a very powerful tool to have on set. It can make things otherwise impossible, and often make your life much easier if it is a hassle free product, even speed things up!

I was just thinking... Scarlet most likely, and Epic for sure, will give us 1080 monitoring, who knows... maybe 4:4:4... :)

Not sure how well this thing would work if the camera's on-set and the video village is off-set (signal going through walls/flats, doors etc)??
