  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GATES "Deep Epic" Underwater Housing, USER reviews here please.

Will,

indeed we got the first Production Deep Epic, and awaiting the second one.

The first unit is now in Dubai, as I have chosen to gift my First position to a special friend, and I will be doing a first dive and a "Deep", pon intended... ) review soon,
but keep in mind that this is not just any under water housing, its GATES, which means is a Professional Under Water Housing, not too difficult to operate
but neither as easy as operating a Splash Proof Hosuing, or an housing by some other manufacturers out there, here you have lots of things to do,
and plenty of places specifically designed for adjustments and weight placement, 3 LGD's (lens gear drives), and lots of goodies, so you can expect nothing else but the very best,
form build quality to controls of Iris, Zoom ann focus, Redmote full controls and a clear view at the RED Touch Screen
via the top mounted or adjustable positioning Screen older, we also got a very long HD-SDI cable so to have out put monitoring for a second diver and or in
shallow depths for the Director seating on the Boat, or outside the water pool while filming girls in some cases... ;)

Not sure I'm in the liberty to post any grabs form the Manual, which is well done and in detail shows pictures and written explanations, but if John form GATES says its okay then I will.

But keep an eye on our site, and on here, I'll post a detail review soon, with a nice BTS video and actual EPIC UW footage to go with... ;)

Gates does make a good product! May I ask what port you have and what lens are you using?

thanks
Jim

Is Deep Epic compatible with Arri Master Primes 12mm, 14mm and 16mm?

I believe it is. You need to select the correct port extender for the lens you want to use. lenses were prefer to use are Arri 8R, Duclos 11 16mm, Red 17mm, Leica 100 f2.8 aPo macro. We are an end user and use a good deal of Gates equipment no other connection to the company other than being a happy customer. Id be happy to tell you what we know but any lens specific questions Im use Gates will be happy too answer direct.

Had a Gates Deep Epic on a TVC about a month ago and was impressed with its elegant design and overall usability. I am not qualified to give a hard core UW perspective on the housing in more demanding applications, not my bag. What I can say is that for someone who is asked to support UW a couple times a year here in San Diego I really appreciate the ease of use and obvious build quality.

Disclosure: I think John Ellerbrock at Gates is a great guy and my impression of the housing may be influenced by the terrific staff at Gates.

Cheers - #19

One thing as a Gates owner, you get full support and backup immediately....which is a blessing when something unexpected occurs and you need either spare parts, technical or even a spare housing. I'd say Gates is 2nd to none in this respect.

This is completely correct. Instant support and assistance. It counts for a lot.

Deep Epic is a great housing and very dependable.

Ketch should know better Tom. If you want a specific lens for a specific shot, John E will see to it that you get it. Gates has no equal.

I totally agree John Ellerbrock and his team at Gates are equalled by no other company when it comes to product support, friendly service and an extremely positive attitude at all levels of their business. The products exceed all others in my experience when it comes to quality manufacturing, optics and elegance of design.

Very very happy with mine, service from the lovely people at Gates has been exceptional. Over the years I've shot Underwater on everything from mini DV, HDcam, super 16,35mm film and IMAX all of which had their limitations. However the Epic in the gates housing is a huge leap forward.
There's a couple of epic clips on my website:
