  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Gate shadow - On OLPF1 & 2?

Good on Nikon (though a recall seems overkill if they have a fix that they'll implement for free).

Also, while the artefact looks exactly the same, is there anyway to confirm this is the exact same thing happening on dragon? Actually, it makes me wonder if the Leica Mount would get rid of it completely (since it's flange distance is the shortest RED makes)...

This is actually very very disturbing, we're just about to send our epic in for the upgrade to dragon and this looks bad. In the thread it is mentioned that at some point RED corrected this issue to some extend. Can somebody with valid information and no speculation chime in and say if a dragon, with the current gate and olpf system (the one installed right now on cameras) presents the same flaw, or is it better now?

It is improved greatly.

It is there and you can make it happen.

Flagging and Matbox helps but at some angles it will appear, but not as wide a bar as it was before.

Happens on all mounts but the Nikon seems to be be more pronounced, matting or flock the inside of the (nikon) mount helps cut a lot of it.

David. Some lenses like Micro-Nikkor 55mm f3.5 and Sigma-for-Nikon 14mm f2.8 have a hard metal rectangular mask on the rear of the lens. Is it worth experimenting with masks on the rearmost element of the trouble prone Nikon lenses?

It's worth experimenting, but I think it's just going to show up at specific top angles. I haven't seen it as side flares but top (and bottom although less likely) are there. Patrick's video in this thread, or some other thread, shows the specific angle (lens and light) it shows up at.

A mattbox is your friend. Of course it's not to friendly if you are "flare hunting" looking for those magical glint of flare moment and these things show up. In more controlled situations, obviously adjustments can be made.

it can spoil shots for sure, if you are not ready for it or never experience it.

If if I had a fire heavey shoot I'd be running some gate flare tests to see which lenses and when and how the stuff occurs because it is repeatable.

hard rear mattes might work to control the angle of light hitting the sensor box.

I'm a flare hunter :(

It's one of the reasons I love my Leica R's. Beautiful flare & veiling glare.

I use flares a lot and have only seen it a couple times

Going to have to test my Scarlet Dragon when it comes in this week. Hoping the crop at 5K is enough to cancel this issue out.

love those leica R's myself. 5.5k super 35 image area might reduce this a bit, as would the HD specific frame sizes.

It would also be good if red recognise this to be a problem which needs to be addressed. Nothing's perfect I know but not being able to shoot into the sun or strong source is not exceptable for the money we have all spent.
Ideally it will be a diy fix as recall would not really be excitable with the lead times and volume they work to.

Suresh,

If you read through the thread, you will discover that the problem has indeed been addressed by RED in the new OLPF design. It does not eliminate it completely. its unfair to say that red has not addressed it when in fact they have.

Its also not not fair to spread the idea that RED doesn't care about these things when they have listened to feedback and done a redesign to correct it.

hi David

if thats addressed than i would say its not good enough and should be looked at again

i'm sure that RED care's, its a business and industry that they are very very passionate about,

But i don't feel we as consumers should settle for anything less than the best for the premium we pay, don't you think?

especially with something so unusual and repeatable.

Suresh,

i agree with you. Everything should be perfect and this anomaly in some shooting situations is less than perfect. I think you have to consider the physics of the sensor box of the EPIC and the OLPF and the new sensor area. I kinda look at it from the other perspective too, we bought a upgrade to a camera and not a whole new model which would have required a whole new level of R&D and pricing to match I am sure.

Gateflare is not new to film style cameras as the examples in this thread shows.

I believe at this point the best strategy is to know how and when it is there, how it can occur and what to do to remedy it. It certainly does not occur on every shot you point toward a light source.

From REDs perspective they probably did everything possible with the new OLPF design in relation to the parameters they had.

What can I do now? Knows it there and deal with it.

I'm guessing that Nikon's full recall of cameras exhibiting a similar design flaw suggests a true fix is more complicated than a DIY solution.

Dave may be right, this will just be the reality of shooting Dragon for the foreseeable future.

Hi all, there seem to be no news/specific reply from RED on this topic, correct? I have the Epic Dragon with LL OLPF and Nikon mount. All of my Nikon lenses exhibit the same, usually annoying gate flare/shadow, like a box inside the frame, lighting up the image in this box. Just wondering if there is an official fix by now since Jarred`s comment in this thread pointed at it mentioning the interchangeable OLPF system which is in my camera. I do have one of the first Nikon mounts though - maybe the flare can be improved by modifying the mount? Thanks and cheers, Thomas

Sent my camera off to RED for a separate issue, and asked if they could modify my Nikon mount to fix the gate shadow issue. They mentioned that there was a factory modification update to the Nikon mount, and they performed it for me while my camera was being serviced. It's the gasket that they added towards the front of the mount. Put in an RMA ticket. =]

Seeing a gorgeous lens flare for the first time without the gate blocking an eighth of it / light smear across the frame was a sight to be seen.
