has anyone solved the problem of exporting from premiere and experiencing a gamma shift in quicktime? Any time i export and play back in quicktime or with safari there is a contrast and color shift. I was wondering if there was a specific export setting that may help me out here.

thanks everyone

no fix i've found. Once I play my prores files in either FCP or VLC they are fine.

Sounds like a 601 to RGB color shift. Are you editing in RGB or 601? If you are 601, try switching to RGB and exporting a new quicktime. See if that makes a difference. In my experience, Apple products lean RGB.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Quicktime... I'm an editor and have been for the last 10 years and the color shift problem has been an issue ever since. The real problem is not in the file itself, but the quicktime player. The reason is that Apple made the decision to color correct on the fly, is the same reason why they had dropped FCP for iMove Professional. End User experience .. Apple wanted to display videos according to the users color profile on the computer. But the problem didn't stop there, because randomly I would get renders from a designer and all would look great until it was dumped to DigiBeta... It's a mess and there isn't a fix... Apple knows of the problem and have not done anything to correct it...

There is one thing you can try that has worked for me... Change your color profile for your monitor to SMPTE-C. At least you wont see the shift on your rig, but remember; If it is a deliverable, the shift may happen down the road. To get around this, deliver a file sequence (dpx, tiff, png, tga)

Thats what I've exsperienced

What codec and wrapper are you selecting in your export options?

I don't think this issue will ever go away, it's been there too long. It is just the player though not the file itself. Upload it to Vimeo or YouTube and it will match your project. Watch it in VLC and it's fine. I also recall if you have Final Cut Studio installed you have one more preference option in QuickTime player Pro that says something like "ignore ColorSync profile" which would effect how the picture would look when checked or unchecked.

It's uncomfortable to explain to a client that is using QT Player that "no really, it looks better than this" :)

As far as i know...Premier is not Color managed....or you cannot choose your color space .....i might be wrong, but i've never found a setting to change this.....and yes, i get color shifts ALL THE TIME transcoding out to prores from Premier.

Another MAJOR issue....is the problem is not always solved by simply saying transcode to DNx or Tiff, DPX....Most television deliverables i work with--well 100% are Prores. When do we think this will ever change? not in a while i'm sure....so If prores is your deliverable, time to find how to match WYSIWYG.
