Gamma & Density's 3cP (On Set Color & RED Workflow Solution) Unveiled @ NAB2009

– Gamma & Density announced that it's world known 3cP on-set color correction system for cinematographers has been upgraded with new capabilities and will be now be available in a number of different flavors, each with a different set of features.

The official “unveiling” of the new 3cP version 3.1 will happened at the NAB show in Las Vegas, at the booth (#SL3314) of our frequent collaborator da Vinci Systems on April 20, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. with a repeat performance on April 21, 2009, at 3:30 p.m.

3cP has entered the field of RED ONE production and post-production workflow, which makes the promise of .r3d camera raw file handling, on-set color correction, and on-set dailies generation a reality.

3cP also will be shown at the "RED On-Set Workflows" Director of Photography conference presented by Gary Adcock on Monday April, 20 at N258 at 3:30 p.m.

Gamma & Density ‘s 3cP has been used on about 25 motion pictures and TV series, including “Iron Man I” and the in-production “Iron Man II” (DP Matthew Libatique, ASC), “Quantum of Solace,” “Kite Runner,” (DP Roberto Schaefer, ASC), “The Tudors I/II/III” (DP Ousama Rawi, BSC, CSC), and the upcoming “State of Play” (DP Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC) just to name a few.

Created by cinematographers for cinematographers, 3cP is the ultimate tool for any user. Built upon the knowledge that there is never enough time to learn a complex system and never any spare time on the set, 3cP has proven many times that it is extremely production-friendly and can easily be adapted into any production, any budget, any workflow.

3cP, as a patented technology, offers unique features unavailable anywhere else, which includes:

• Full support for motion clips in addition to still images.
• Support for DPX, Cineon, and TIFF image sequences.
• Direct support of RED r3d raw camera footage.
• Realtime playback of motion footage.

• Dailies generation with optional burned-in timecode and smart slates.
• Background processing of media backups and footage rendering.
• Print-to-video feature with output of linear timecode (LTC).
• Syncing of audio tracks to footage for dailies rendering.
• Backup of media files to up to three backup locations, with byte-by-byte
verification.
• ALE (Avid Log Exchange) file generation for rendered output files.

In addition, 3cP continues to offer a robust set of tools for color correction, 3D LUT generation, ASC CDL support, monitor calibration, and communication with post production.

I have downloaded the demo and have been playing with it... It looks amazing. It renders the raw files into prores 720p dailies with a nice slate at the beginning, really fast. I was amazed by the rendering speed and the quality of the image. To cc a clip is really easy, fast and the results look really nice. Hope that the full version will be THE tool for the red onset workflow.
I wish that we could animate the masks and have custom shapes instead of round and square only... But even without this option I think that it is a great onset tool. The directors love it!

The software sounds great... Will a working system be at the Red User Event Wednesday night at the Rio Ballroom?

Thanks
Dave

Dear Ivan

Dear Ivan

Dear Ivan,
After researching your inquiry, I have spoken to a few members from the GD team and they have pulled up multiple emails from you along with their responses. The information they provided have answered your questions a few times. Maybe the replies are not reaching you directly, or just simply not making it to you. We apologize for this inconvenience, but next time feel free to call our office at 323-436-7593. I messaged your reduser account so if you do not receive our response, please let us know via telephone.

I'm asking to sent me a link with the latest official full version of 3cP 3.1 to

download as soon as you can just because I'm a beta tester and customer.

G&D -

does this feature auto-sync media to BWFs? Can you select which audio tracks you want to use from the wav files?
Mark,

Yes, 3cP will auto-sync BWF files to RED footage. You can then (if you
need to) adjust sync in quarter-frame increments.

The current version syncs all tracks in the BWF you specify. You cannot
select individual tracks, or sync multiple BWFs.

For other RED users: A BWF is a "Broadcast Wave File," basically a regular .wav
audio file with some metadata (like timecode) included.

Very interesting tool I have been searching for an affordable solution for on set calibrated CC tool combined with vector scopes.
I have a few questions though:

- Is there a basic computer spec requirement? Will an average MBP be able to run 3cP well enough?

- Providing I am using the software on a Macpro will it be able to use all cores for dailies/offline media generation and or preview?

- Can 3cP or will it be able to in the future generate a metadata report or to that matter is it possible to burn into the offline media metadata or specifically selected data out of the metadata of each clip?

- Once the software is purchased how many computers will I be able to install it on?

Thanks.

Cold Pizza,

Answers to your questions:

- Is there a basic computer spec requirement? Will an average MBP be able to run 3cP well enough?

GD response:
Minimum System Requirements:
Intel- or PowerPC-based Macintosh computer. (RED r3d support
requires an Intel-based system.)
At least 2GB of RAM.
1 GB of free disk space.
Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later.
QuickTime 7.5.6 or later.

- Providing I am using the software on a Macpro will it be able to use all cores for dailies/offline media generation and or preview?

GD response:

Yes, you will be able to generate dailies and preview your files if you are using an 8 core Macpro. Obviously the faster the Macpro the faster generation of dailies.

- Can 3cP or will it be able to in the future generate a metadata report or to that matter is it possible to burn into the offline media metadata or specifically selected data out of the metadata of each clip?

GD response:
Not sure what kind of "metadata" you are referring to, but:

Burned into the slate at the head of the dailies, and included in our
reports, is metadata which includes date and time, clip filename, RED
processing settings (kelvin, ISO, etc.), and, of course, the 3cP color
correction settings.

- Once the software is purchased how many computers will I be able to install it on?

GD response:

After purchasing 3cP you will be able to load it onto one computer. The download will be provided for multiple computers if needed, but you will be given only one security dongle.

I'll see you at NAB with my credit card ....

Thanks for the info I can't make it to NAB and would like to know more about 3cP.

Do you know what CPU % of an 8 core Nehalem Macpro 3cP can get up to when generating dailies?

processing settings (kelvin, ISO, etc.), and, of course, the 3cP color

Other info from the metadata that I have found useful especially on long form projects were: FPS, Frame height, frame width, total frames, shutter (deg, sec), audio channels, file segments, (with the cooke Is) iris, focus, and focal length. I incorporate this info in a database for the production and sometimes clients have requested selected info (mostly frame rate) burnt onto offline media. Was wondering if this might be a possibility with 3cP?

I know it is not a big thing but I would like to clarify whether 3cP will be able to extract metadata and save it in a file format i.e. .rtf, .csv, .pdf etc... ?

Thanks.

question 1:
what is the difference between 3.0 and 3.1 version in 3cp/sf?

question 2:
the 50% of discount for upgrading from 3cp/sf to 3cp/sl (for existing users) is for limited time?

question 3:
the 3cp/sf 3.1 is ready for download(full version not demo)?.if yes how existing user can download this new version?

i bought this a month ago. it looks like a VERY promising product. I look forward to meeting you guys at NAB, and getting to know the system more.

I would love it if I could buy additional dongles for use on multiple machines at a fairly reduced rate.....any hpe of this??

thanks....

David,

Yes, we will be at the RED user event in our booth with an operating system for users to try out. hope to see you there!
