  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Game is changing... 7d is official

Just saw this on another forum, kinda interesting.

Those Panny lenses will probably work out a lot better on the 7D, especially for 1080p video. I shot FF35 timelapse RAW sequences with their Primo anny's and they covered only about 2/3rds of the FF35 sensor.

Every time a new camera comes on the market and guess what..... we start to compare this with the red one. I don't understand this comparison. Why... well I can't shoot a feature on a canon and output to film with the same quality as the red, I don't have the same flexibility with the canon codec as I do with red. which is the primary reason i bought the red one. BTW we have 2 5D mkII. If i ws shorting a wedding or a corporate video, sure canon is good enough.

Life is simple, is the tool that you have at hand fore-fills your needs for the job?... Yes then it's the right tool. No... go find the right one.
So far I have not found an alternative that will replace my red one for the price point and my needs.

I'm behind in keeping current with the posts, but i do agree.
Because of my budget and needs ive settled on 2 hv30s and a
sony hvr-hd1000u for documentaries. Comparing any dSLR
with Red seems like comparing apples and oranges.

Is RED sleeping? Why do the make us wait until a show to announce a product? Are they getting in the dinosaure business?

Probably just a Zacuto or Hoodman eyepiece thingy. Not electronic.

figured it wasn't electronic, just looked like it might fit well with optical eyepiece rather than just a shade.

Don't confuse bit rate with image quality. There is not a linear correlation here.
I have seen 4mb/sec H.264 live 1080p video conference feeds that look as good as Canon's 40mb. Much of that data rate is used up dealing with sensor down sampling issues and is not reflected in the quality of the final images.

I did not say there was, however, if you view it a certain way, and objectively, there is a significant increase for professional images, provided you don't stuff it up, like I pointed out about the down-sampling, and things like implementation, and if you use intra instead of inter at those rates, it would also decrease it. Over a mpeg2 bandwidth restricted HDTV channel, even some $200+ camera have such good codec performance it might be hard to tell codec difference (except the camera is likely to be worse). For consumers 24mb/s H264 is great, 40mb/s would give it some polish.

You might also note, that a 4mb/s hugely inter compressed (and i don't know if there is special facial mapping ability in h264, but they were doing 6000:1 over ten or twenty years ago) conference feed is mostly of a largely still image that requires little compression. But if you compared it split screen/flipping to the Canon you might still find a surprising amount of difference, that is more pleasing, despite the flaws. If you had a crisp clear pixel, true resolution large screen that you had a wide field of view on, focused eyes, glasses, and lacking the the detail (like on the face) you might also discover that it is significantly better again. Is the 4mb/s feed 720p30, and are you comparing it to the 1080p30 full HD image at over 40mb/s on the Canon through a player that does not degrade the image (or improve it through clearing up artifacts and uprezing, like the conference feed may)?

I have been comparing footage from many homemade digital cinema projects and pro cameras for years, and these are just some of the issues you come by (what stumped me is the down sampling issue, which I would not have expected to find in this day on such a branded camera, and only 50% expectation that they might not have a very good h264 codec implementation). I am not so good on lens issues as yet, but some people here might be able to compare the Canon lens to the conference lens.

It might also be pointed out that 40mb/s inter, approximates 100mb/s professional HD h264 intra video, and that is half of what you would, like for cinema, and less than what you would want for sHD resolutions, or Red codec.
