  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Game is changing... 7d is official

HVX seems to have better DR than the 7D in video mode. Something about the 7D footage is very harsh and abrasive..

I was really hoping the 7D would be the "scarlet fill in" I was wanting it to be until scarlet was born.. But judging from the test footage, it aint. That wont stop me buying one of course... Theres no competition out there in that size range..

Ebay is gonna be littered with bodies come scarlet day. "THERES BODIES EVERYWHERE!!"

Yes, I know that. Indeed, I've charged top dollar to the British Government to shoot a video on the 5D.

I've also shot and directed on every format from iPhone to 35mm, I've also owned and used 35mm lens adapters, so I'm well acquainted with the desire to shoot shallow DoF, thus, I'm well placed to judge - and my assessment is the 7D, though more useable as a video camera than the 5D is not a professional tool. You can make it work, you can get away with it, but it's not even close to being a pro video camera - it's not even a pro stills cam!!

Try ringing the BBC or NBC and asking them if they would like a comedy or drama shot on a 7D.
you're right.. :icon_bs: only horror..

On the topic of the professionalism in tools...

I often point to the shining example of James Longley's Oscar nominated documentary, Iraq In Fragments. Entirely shot with the crummy ole low end DVX100. Just something to think about...

ideas + creative vision > format and tools

With that said, nice cameras and better/faster work-flows always really really help.

I just scooped up a D90, mainly for stills but I also loved the idea of 720 24p. Plus it was def affordable. I would have went with the MK2 but I really wanted 24p. I didn't go with the GH1 because IMHO the D90 was superior with regards to stills. Now this 7D looks really enticing, as a stills and video camera. Of course, my eye is still on Scarlet and I will definitely scoop one up when they drop. I agree with Jim re: Canon's business approach, lame. All I can say is that its a GREAT RAD time to be an image maker. YEEHAW!

is scarlet coming for 1699?? WOW

In some regards the DVX100 is a superior camera. *ducks*

7d sample footage looks terrible... jellovision? check. nasty video-looking blur? check. seriously, i'd rather use a DVX. solid, designed for its purpose, good motion look.

mr neck.. you should be smoking from a different supplier.. red my friend.. you should contact your consumers association

So would anyone go so far to predict a feature will be shot with this Canon? What is the niche application for this camera?

"BlairWitch" project was shot on mini DV if am not wrong, was printed on film and projected in cinema,I don't think the footage from 5DmkII won't be able to do it.

Maybe it shoots H264 but Canon is able to offer a sub-RAW mode with a firmware release for an external docked SSD unit...

Remember : 2 Digic IV proc inside ! :scared:

And why not a new XL Camcorder with EOS CMOS and lens mount ?:biggrinjester:

That wasn't commissioned by the BBC and the choice of camera was integral to the dramatc concept, same with 28 Days later. All broadcasters will allow all format/cameras if there is a compelling reason why it is shot on a sub-pro camera, but there's a huge difference between that and approving the camera for general use.

It may well make a good second unit camera or used for special effects. I've yet to find one camera that's good for every task, there is no ideal one size fits all. Used for their strengths the 5D or 7D may work perfectly fine if used in the right circumstances. But Im not selling our R1's.

All the sample footage looks like crap. So did the 5d. I never thought "revire" or whatever was that impressive, editing and shot continuity was crap and dof was awkward. The most impressive videos are always some random stuff on vimeo. Red One can look like video, I've seen many video-ish clips. And so can 35mm film if shot like crap.

There are some better sample videos on this page (near the bottom).

More sample stuff (click here)

Water looks pretty good... but the low-light band sample does look like crap. I guess low-light work should be saved for the markII.

Yea, it's pretty dumb to say Canon isn't serious about video. For Nikkon though... probably true. But the addition of 24p, 25p, (1280x720) 60p and 50p... and equiped it with dual digic IV processors has got to mean something. Why would they need dual processors? One would suffice for stills... that's for sure.

And the h.265 is a stupid point too. Yes, it's not the amazing all powerful redcode, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be when transcoded, it's near 40mbs. You could make the same argument and say that Redcode sucks compared to actually scanning 35mm. Not to mention allot of directors and cinematographers still won't shoot digital and probably disregard the Red One as a "professional" option.

Yes, spec wise the image is almost as good as the HVX. But how to the images feel? 5D feels more epic... HVX still feels like a cinemax porno. I just can't justify shooting on a sub 2/3" camera anymore. Not when you can have the visual aesthetics of APS-c or ff35 for under $3,000... Codecs, even shitty ones, can't ruin the aesthetics of a 35mm frame. (unless it's mud like the GH-1 or something horrible like that)

BTW, supposedly Canon fixed the movement artifacts, now the image won't break apart when the codec over loades.

Well, that makes doubly sure, the 7d is not good enough. If they are serious about digital video 50 and 60p full HD is the leading edge, none of this 30p stuff.. This is supposed to be h264 inter compressed, there should be virtually no breakup from movement. If they have down sampling with missing pixels, that is another problem. Video format would also need to be at least 10 bit 4:2:2. But still, at over 40mb/s inter h264, that is way better than broadcasters are actually broadcasting (which even my $100 personal HD camera's codec can compete with).

Now that is more interesting, Scholastique, where would I find information on this sub raw mode? That might be heaps better. The sample picture of the video at Dpr, reminds me so much of my $100 camera (undoubtedly the Canon handles everything much better though).

Don't confuse bit rate with image quality. There is not a linear correlation here.
I have seen 4mb/sec H.264 live 1080p video conference feeds that look as good as Canon's 40mb. Much of that data rate is used up dealing with sensor down sampling issues and is not reflected in the quality of the final images.

Hey!

Hey!

Just saw this on another forum, kinda interesting.
