  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Game is changing... 7d is official

I was considering getting a GH1 but now I'm gonna wait.

If it has less jello and higher compression bitrate that's the one.

Supposidly, the 7d has twice the sensor read-out of the 5D, so half the jello. There are some sample 7D videos somewhere with a rally car mounted camera where you can't see any motion artifacts. No mud like the GH-1.

Game hasn't changed at all for people who want a professional, high performance cinema camera.
Professional is something that's in your hands. Not camera specs. Scarlet will be better for heavy digital composting and action of course. But there's no reason a 7d couldn't be used to achieve "professional" results on something like a comedy or drama.

Pretty serious upgrade to the video capabilities if true. I've got a 90 day Costco Return policy on my Rebel T1i. I'm pretty certain I'll be trading that in for one of these 7D's. Might be a perfect 2nd cam for RED. At $1900 it's got to effect the Scarlet market somehow. Especially if it ships within a month.

For a few thousand less than a Scarlet the 7D might be "good enough" to sway some people who fall in the lower end of the Scarlet market. Sure the Scarlet will be better, no doubt about that but in this lower segment price matters a lot. I do think if Canon has solved some of their issues (and added the all powerful 24p) that the 7D might actually cut into Scarlet sales a bit. Again, this is for the lower end, not the guys who have been planning on getting a FF Scarlet.

Exactly. The 7D has the specs, and early killer sample footage, to show that it can do a great job. Unfortunetely, that camera, as well as the Red One, don't come with a magic button to help you create award winning movies. They are as good, or bad, as the operator.

Lack of 1080p overcranking is unfortunate.

I'm not sure there is an audio/mic in.

It is tempting, and will become more so until the schedule, availability, specs, and functional price for the Scarlet becomes clear. I have so many projects, unrecoverable precious moments of life, demanding to be shot. I feel like I've been in camera purgatory waiting and have only enough will to wait a little while longer. Part of me wants to pull the trigger on this (EOS 7D) and accept a year or longer wait for a Scarlet down the road. This is an angst-filled decision that makes me sick and my knees hurt (I don't know why) because I feel like I have a lot of past-time invested in my wait for Scarlet and I lust for its features.

Yes, I know that. Indeed, I've charged top dollar to the British Government to shoot a video on the 5D.

I've also shot and directed on every format from iPhone to 35mm, I've also owned and used 35mm lens adapters, so I'm well acquainted with the desire to shoot shallow DoF, thus, I'm well placed to judge - and my assessment is the 7D, though more useable as a video camera than the 5D is not a professional tool. You can make it work, you can get away with it, but it's not even close to being a pro video camera - it's not even a pro stills cam!!

Try ringing the BBC or NBC and asking them if they would like a comedy or drama shot on a 7D.

it shoots h264

I believe the 5d mk2 does also?

So if "supposedly, the 7d has twice the sensor read-out of the 5D mk2". So my guess is they are getting better results with a smaller sensor?

Nikon needs to make it's next move… and something better then the last one…

This isn't really what I want from a camera, but Red better get moving on their release dates.

And it has a recording time of only 12 mins.

True, but the 12 min limit is only a file size limitation and not a limit to what you can get on a card. 12min=a 4gb file (roughly), so if you have a 32gb card you can record up to 96 minutes on a single card. Not too shabby given that the bit rate appears to be in the upper 40's.

As far as I'm concerned this really looks to be a good option provided it is released at the end of this month like promised. The APS-C sensor is bigger than the 2/3" Scarlet I was originally looking at, and while it still lacks some of the benefits of the Scarlet (like redcode), for what I need it looks to be a good fit.

Nice DoF, 24p, Interchangeable lenses, 18mp stills and no tape is a dream come true. Audio is probably pure crap like the 5DII, but it's better to record that separately since you can get better pre-amps and bit rates than what most high end video cameras have.

Completely feel your pain. I started looking into viable Scarlet interim alternatives a while back and finally came close to pulling the trigger on the 5D since I have Canon lenses already, and was looking to upgrade my aging Digital Rebel I was using for stills. The only thing holding me up was 30p, then the rumors started about the 7d and I thought I would wait a month or so to see how that transpired.

As for the audio part, while it sounds like a complete pain to record it separately (and might not be viable depending on what you plan to shoot), I think this is really the best way to go. You can find some good and reasonably affordable 24bit/96khz solid state recorders that are pretty good and the quality would be better than even what the RED ONE currently offers.

Not a game changer, not a professional video or still camera. It is a high end "prosumer" camera, that is all.

It's only effect is getting suckers to shoot sub bar video on a still camera, and cutting into the low end video camera market. It's under $2000 for a reason.

...

For many types of work, this makes a lot sense. But for those of us working on documentaries, a 12 min limit on a take is a deal killer.
