Hi .

I'm looking to upgrading my lenses. I've started out with Canon 16-35 2.8 USM and Canon 50 1.2 USM lenses on the Canon 5D mark 3 modified with Magic Lantern .... then Switched to RED Raven ...

Now I'm looking to upgrade my lenses. I know I will at some near point buy the Dragon-X S35 (or bigger sensor) with PL mount so to future proof my lenses I want lenses that I can use both with EF and then convert them to PL mount .. or buy PL lenses that I can for now convert to EF mount ...

I've looked at the SigmaCine with EF Conversion kit and Zeiss CP2 with Conversion

Suggestions please ?

Best Regards

Andreas

Other than lenses that cover full frame, I'm not sure what would be deemed future proof. We may see radical new technologies emerge over the next decade and who knows what that will mean for optics. I think the bigger question is, what do you shoot? What kind of look do you find yourself going towards more often? Are they just for you or are you looking to rent out lenses too? I have found that one set of lenses is never enough to cover all projects. For example, I find recently that I'm grabbing a Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS stabilized lens a lot for certain client projects that I know are more run and gun and a lot of handheld. But other projects, I just really like the looks I get with contax lenses. And then other jobs where I know that I'll need cine lenses both for optical performance and mechanics. What lenses you will own, comes down to taste and practicality. So, some testing may be in order if you are not certain of both those things.

if you don't have the bid budget. Check out the SLR Magic APO Hyperprimes. They come close to the Cooke look but doesn't cost that much. Not heavy, almost no CA, pleasing bokeh. Pl mount and they also sell an adapter to ef mount.

Without a doubt the only true future proof lenses are full frame auto focusing lenses.

I think sometime in the next five years there's going to be a new cinema lens mount, possibly with a shorter flange distance, but more importantly that supports integrated motors.

Short answer as far as budget primes, imo: Sigma Cines. No question about it.

You can save money by going with pre-owned CP.2’s but you’ll be buying what are already yesterday’s flavor.

Are you meaning the Sigma’s in EF mount only? I talked to Sigma directly, because I want to be able to have PL and EF and they told me that the PL lenses are PL only. The “stills mount” versions can swap between the different stills mounts, but not to PL. I can’t verify if this is set in stone, because of a technical limitation or just that’s what the rep has been told to say, but it can really be done if you push the issue hard enough with the right people(i.e: I’ll buy a set of your lenses, but only if I can swap between EF and PL).

Yeah, I am in the same boat. Looking to upgrade lenses, or get new ones.
The only thing is, I really dont like the look of the sigma ART lenses, they look way too sharp, not cinematic in my eye. Atlas orion is something I am considering, allthough very pricey. I wish there were some other cheap anamorphic lenses released soon. Like 2-3-4-5k per lens.

I work for the Canadian distributor of Sigma. You can't swap the PL mount to anything else. The EF to E (or reverse) can be done by a factory authorized service centre such as ourselves. It's not like the Zeiss CP.2/3/Supremes which can be swapped back and forth with only 8 bolts. Suggest you look at a PL to EF adapter and purchase in PL mount if you need to have both.

This is similar to what the US rep told me(minus “get an adapter”). Do you know of or can recommend a PL to EF adapter that would work with the 105 T1.5? I’ve checked into some, but the 105 PL mount is too “deep” for the adapters that I’ve looked(specs giving mount depth accepted/compatible) at and I’m not sure if it’s just the specific adapters that I’ve checked into or if it will “bottom out” into the connections, etc in an EF Mount camera(C300). EF is not the end of the world, so to speak, right now, but if I do add/move on to cameras that don’t allow me to switch mounts in a few seconds like my F55 and are essentially “PL only”, I’d like to be covered.

Also, what is the limitation that precludes swapping from PL to the other mount types?

The larger image circle and look of the Tokina Vista Primes is what sold me. We are generally PL mount only, but realized that we could easily swap to multiple mounts (EF/Nikon/M43) if needed:

There are too many factors against Sigma to consider them for long-term use. They are great now, but I think the Tokina Vistas will serve us much longer. Good luck on your search!

I don't have specific experience with any adapter, it was only a suggestion knowing that PL has a longer flange focal distance than EF, which should make an adapter possible. Maybe check with some rental houses, they usually have decent knowledge about these things.

Sigma do not provide a reason why PL cannot be adapted to EF or E mount, only that it can't be done.
