With the new release of the Unified DSMC2 Body and different sensor options I wonder about the future of Scarlet. This was asked by a number of people in the forum but hasn't seem to be answered yet. It seems that the Dragon sensor will be phased out with the Unified Body not having a Dragon sensor option. Will we see a refresh of the Scarlet with perhaps a Gemini sensor? Will Raven possibly get a refresh as well.

I would love to see a refresh of the Scarlet as it is an affordable option for guys such as myself trying to break into the RED ecosystem. I hesitate to go with Scarlet being that there are these great new sensors available now. I mean dragon is 5 years old now, although it is a beautiful image i think if i could have a scarlet with a Gemini sensor i would jump on it. I don't necessarily need the 96fps at 5k of the Unified Body with Gemini. I would be happy with the current 50fps at 5k of the scarlet now.

Would love to hear other peoples thoughts.

I'm betting Hydrogen One and its modules will be the new low end of the RED ecosystem.
 
The Raven and Scarlet are both oddities to me. I just bought a used Scarlet-W and I still feel like it's an oddity that doesn't really make tons of sense for RED to focus on. For them to provide the level of service and dedication to their market, selling cameras at these low price points is a weird situation. The Hydrogen One really seems to be waay out there but "the future is mobile" and you know you're going to see better and better mobile sensors from the big phone OEMs so I guess it makes sense for RED to get ahead of that tidal wave.

I probably spent 3 months of running calculations on the Scarlet versus "better" and the Scarlet made sense for me because I'm not running my camera on film shoots with $5000/day budgets. But for most people I know in my shoes, they're doing exceptional creative work with cameras 1/2 to even 1/4 the price of the Scarlet rig. They don't want nor need Scarlet.

It's just a weird market segment that feels like it probably costs more to maintain that the profit point would be, but if RED has a ton of sensors sitting around needing to be sold, it makes sense that they created this segment to get people into DSMC2 accessories so they can liquidate the Dragon sensor inventory.

Once that inventory is gone, I expect the lines to be gone, too.

I fear that the life of Scarlet of Raven could be short and may end once Dragon inventory is gone like you said. I'm in a weird spot to were i don't need the best of the best but the other options on the market in my opinion aren't as good as Scarlet. For the extra money (compared to other brands) the Scarlet is an amazing unit and would suit my needs. I do believe there is a small market for both Scarlet and Raven. It will be interesting to see what RED decides to do moving forward.

That's why I bought a Scarlet-W last week and am not returning it within my 30 day allowance even with the new announcement. The Scarlet-W fits my needs and the accessories will let me upgrade to something better if I need it in a year or two. I can't get that from any other camera company, right now.

In 2-3 years, I think we'll see some massive competition in the $10,000-$20,000 (complete rig) market, especially from companies who will push industry standard protocols versus proprietary ones. I want to see 300Mbps 6K streaming off a $2500 sensor via USB3, with 25 stops of dynamic range (Fuji can do 29 stops already). Hollywood will be off to 16K or 32K by then, lol.
 
It seems the general consensus is that the Raven and Scarlet will eventually disappear as the inventory is depleted. It would be nice to hear from someone at RED on this subject.

I hope not. Red always had an entry level camera called Scarlet. Many people are happy with lesser fps and lesser power. After tyhe Dragon sensors are not manufactured anymore, I have a feeling Scarlet line will continue with some other sensor.
 
Maybe they will lower prices on some existing stuff to compete more with the lower end market, now that they will have a lot of people trading in their cameras? A bit like when they did a sudden sale of Red Ones for 4500 dollars or something.
The competition for Sony and Black Magic is growing and maybe if RED wants to capture a part of that market (that can also provide sales for more media, batteries, eco system etc) that's a plan? No idea.
 
I really hope it sticks around. I am in the market for either a Raven or Scarlet (leaning towards Scarlet because of all the Nikon glass i have). At this time i am not ready to buy as funds are allocated to other things. So it may be a year and a little bit before i am able to pull the trigger. If i know it were to be discontinued i would see what i could do to speed up the buying process. On the other hand i don't want to buy too early to find out a week later that the Scarlet is going to get a Gemini sensor.

RED Inc hasn't file any new trademarks for "Scarlet" since "Scarlet-W" so I don't foresee them releasing anything in the next month or two. The Scarlet-W trademark was filed November 12, 2015 and they announced the camera December 2015 -- about a month after.
 
I think you guys might be missing the point of the DSMC2 announcement... The Scarlet is already no more; the same way the Epic, and Weapon are both no more. This is the way Red is going to be from now on. One body style, multiple sensors. The days of camera lines are dead.
 
I get what Red is doing and it's great, but it's too bad they don't keep a Dragon though.
I get they dont keep the 6k cut, as people may think it's better than Gemini, but keep a full spec 5k cut of the Dragon sensor seems logical for the masses.

That would be cool.

(And a Mysterium. And a Mysterium-X. All in DSMC2 with state of the art IPP2 treatment. I wonder how it would look.
What a line up it would be)

Not really. Scarlet-W and Raven are very much still there. They have only unified the Epic-W, Weapon and Monstro bodies.

That's funny, I was going by this: http://www.red.com/builder But I bet they'll sell off the remaining stock and one day it will suddenly disappear from the site. But the Dragon is definitely obsolete now. And why in the world would they bother putting an MX sensor in a DSMC2 body? Technology moves on, as must we.

Because it's fun! Remember the gap between DSMC1 Dragon and DSMC2 Dragon. How can you not at least be curious about M-MX on DSMC2. We will probably never see it, but I wonder if there is somewhere at Red HQ a prototype on a shelf, like those fixed-lens Scarlet we never saw.
