I can't speak for RED but it was never my understanding that only "original" owners could upgrade their camera.

For example, I'm quite sure you could buy a used RED One with M sensor and upgrade it to MX.

Jim Jannard also made several statements circa 2008-2009 concerning the RED One being upgradable primarily with it's sensor.
Monstro was specifically named at the time.

If this remains the case I don't see why a used RED One couldn't be upgraded.

RED has to clarify this though it seems they have countless times in the past.
