Hey everyone, I have some questions: What is going to happen to the Red One? Will it upgrade to the Dragon sensor, or will it not sell anymore? Will the price go down? Also, is the Scarlet going to match its specs in the future, such as 120 fps 2k and 4.5k? Sorry for these questions, just curious. Thank you for any help!

Scarlet-x will not match Red One as far as framerates; probably ever.

The RED ONE seems to be obsolete now that EPIC's here.

Given that RED One with the same sensor outperforms Scarlet I don't see where you are coming from? Yes the price secondhand has dropped since the announcement of Scarlet but where is the 'obsolete' bit. It shoots all the Scarlet frame rates + 120fps at 2k. Scarlet is 120 at 1k and is not even activated yet.

REDONE prices have reached a point where if you can overlook the additional size/weight factor is cheaper than Scarlet and shoots the same image. That really makes it 'seem obsolete'..................REDONE, trust me is not obsolete!

Just because of our little "discussion" in that other thread doesn't mean that you need to go around second-guessing all my other posts in the forum.

My point is that the RED ONE does indeed seem obsolete. While I don't expect it to happen, I wouldn't be surprised if RED discontinues it completely. RED's product line would be complete enough with just Scarlet and EPIC alone. I don't see a need for the RED ONE in the future. And I think it's lack of support for the DSMC system proves that.

Not even close to be obsolete.

Sorry everyone if I didn't write my post clearly. The title of this thread is "Future of Red One." It is my personal opinion that the RED ONE does not have a place in the future of RED's product line. My point was that between Scarlet and EPIC, there will be no need for the RED ONE. In the future.

I do not think that the RED ONE is currently obsolete. However, I think that it will become so in a few years.

i was tempted to buy a used red one on ebay a few months back as I saw one go for around 9k with a couple accessories. The form factor and start up time of Scarlet alone were enough to sway me. HDR doesn't hurt either.

Just wanted to mention something I read today in AC, David Fincher says he prefers the Red One to the Epic.

"I like the Red One MX a lot- in fact, I wish we hadn't switched to the Epic at the end of the shoot. There's nothing wrong with the Epic, but I sort of like the graininess of the MX. It's an aesthetic choice, not a technical one." -David Fincher

I got a feeling that as long as pro filmmakers still vouch for it, we won't be seeing the R1 going anywhere.

That is quite interesting! I suppose it all comes down to personal preference. It'll be very interesting to see what happens to the RED ONE over the next few years.

The RED ONE just finished shooting "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Go watch it. Then tell me the RED ONE doesn't matter.

Silly. Really.

Jim

The Red One is an amazing camera and it didn't magically "go bad" overnight just because of the Epic or Scarlet. Look at the list of movies shot on Red One, it is staggering....R1 is past, present and future, the only variable is people.

I was just thinking that since so many people like James Cameron and Peter Jackson are shooting on EPIC now, it might become the ultimate replacement for the RED ONE. I honestly did not mean to sound silly.

I don't think it matters very much though... I love RED. You make both the RED ONE and the EPIC. Whichever one of your cameras filmmakers use to produce their movies, it's still 'Shot on RED'. And to me, that's what I think is the most important thing.

I will say, however, that because I don't know the future of the RED ONE for a fact, perhaps I shouldn't have participated in this thread. I was basically guessing when I wrote that I think it's a possibility RED may one day discontinue the R1.

The RED ONE is a beautiful piece of equipment that has been used on some incredible films. I know that and understand that completely. Just as there are many filmmakers who still prefer to shoot on actual film, I believe that there will always be people who no matter what RED comes out with in the future (10, even 15 years from now), will always continue to shoot with the R1, just like what Drew quoted from David Fincher. But I think for most people, the DSMC system that you've created will be very intriguing and because of this, they'll want to shoot on EPIC or Scarlet. The idea of a modular camera system is absolutely brilliant! Being able to replace lens mounts from PL to Canon, taking a Dual Battery Module off and putting a Quad Battery Module on, replacing a Pro I/O Module only when needed... It's all such an incredible way to use a camera. And I think it's this that'll make many people want to shoot with your DSMC system.

I apologize if I what I wrote sounds silly. I was simply guessing. =)

I wanted to follow-up on my previous post. I don't believe the RED ONE magically went bad overnight. But if you compare the feature list of the R1 and EPIC, in my opinion, EPIC beats R1 on all accounts. It captures larger resolution images, higher frame rates, greater dynamic range, is smaller and lighter, captures HDRx and is part of the DSMC system. If someone was just getting into cinematography, or if a filmmaker had to choose between the RED ONE or EPIC, I don't see why they wouldn't choose EPIC. There's a huge list of movies that have been shot with the R1, but look at the list of movies that are currently being shot on EPIC. And it hasn't even been a year since its release! The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hobbit, Underworld 4, Resident Evil: Retribution, etc. These directors and producers can choose any camera in the world they want, including the R1. Yet, they're choosing EPIC. I think there's a reason for that. And I think it's that reason that EPIC is going to be the future of RED.

But again, that's just my personal opinion. I may be wrong. :)

Jim I love you, you are the best and yeah you can make AMAZING video with the RED one. BUT. I have to agree with Brian here on this one. Us Brian's need to stick together, lol. At the end of the day, these cameras are products. Like Apple, if they had kept the Lisa in their line and just upgraded the motherboard, Apple would be where it was before Steve came back. The Red One is amazing and ground breaking, but from my standpoint, things are moving forward with RED, and if as a product alone I would revamp the one, call it the RED TWO or something. Make it more compact or just something to make filmmakers think twice when choosing epic or one. Just an opinion.

I own 7 cameras ranging from the Z1U to HDX-900 to F900. Like all cameras, they are tools. They come and go. We roll with clients needs, etc. But, the R1 is an awesome camera. I bought mine 2 months ago knowing, like all of us, that Scarlet was about to be announced. It has proven to be bulletproof, make incredible imagery, and has served me well. I will keep my RED One MX until the wheels fall off. I love it!!!

I agree with you Brian and I know what you mean. RED will soon stop manufacturing "new" RED ONEs so in that sense it is obsolete. But the best buy for Indie Moviemakers of limited resources is a complete RED ONE MX kit. With it you could go out and shoot an award winning movie. This should be true for the next ten years.

I completely agree. People can buy a fully-funtional RED ONE package for $20K or less, which is a great price for the quality of images it produces. I never said the RED ONE doesn't matter; I think it does matter and it has mattered. People have done incredible things with it. However, as I said in my previous posts, I don't see the R1 as the future of RED. But then again, the best I can do is guess. Only Mr. Jannard knows for certain. :)

Remember, RED is taking back hundreds of REDONEs from Stage 3. I don't think they're going in the junk heap. My bet would be that they'll stop making new ones and sell "battle tested" R1s at a substantially reduced price.

I have to agree...Let's just say for the sake of argument that this is truly it...the fat lady has sung for the R1...it will have no more improvements, no more sensor upgrades, no more firmwares...I say it will be YEARS 'till some other camera manufacturer even comes close to matching the R1. I still show up on set and shoot with the R1 and seasoned professionals jaw's drop when the see the dailies...now that says a lot.
