  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Future of film lighting?

I don't know whether they will be the future for film lighting but the idea of integrating them into a window is a great idea. thanks for sharing.

the electroluminescent sheets have been around for years.
Maybe philips can market it now properly.
I'm not even sure if they are similar technology but they look the same

Not sure about the colour accuracy but the idea of independently dimmable and modular snap-together grids that could be made into any-size-you-like millimetre thick panels that could disassemble into a tiny case is very interesting. Might take a few years to get there though. Nice to have interesting options on the way.

Interesting.

I wonder what it will mean for hard light sources. So many of the new technologies - Fluorescent, LED, OLED, Phosphorus, are very much more efficient than traditional film lighting but throw off very soft light. And, they take so much less power and throw off very little heat. It will be hard to justify going back to, or mixing in, tungsten sources when they are so much more cumbersome to work with. I guess there is always HMI...

It'll be a while before something replaces the full spectrum and wonderful brute force of an Arrimax18 I would say - but for close up work these emerging technologies are very interesting for their speed and lightweight rigging potential.

Light Emitting PLasma (LEP) is a single-point light source that has a lot of potential in the film world. Hi CRI, dimmable, highly energy efficient, longer life than LED without degredation over time. But it needs some more development work to tailor it for film and, the price needs to drop.

Hi James

Are you ever troubled by the light coming out of the single ended bulbs in smaller output HMI sources? I am often struggling with the colour of 2.5ks and similar...

regards

Michael L

Hi Michael. I find HMI's (while full spectrum) suffer from horrendous temperature change as the bulbs near the end of their life - skewing along the green/magenta axis and colour temperature - naturally the occasional rental house might be keen to keep bulbs working and out in the field for as long as possible. Also dimming them skews the colour temperature. The newer arris are pretty good I find. Are you using older bulbs or fixtures?

Hi James

Thank you for your response.. You are probably right and it is the bulbs that are causeing the problems (I do sometimes just pull them and pop new ones in and that can help... but I do need to be a bit more scientific. The problem is that this is dificult on a shoot and it leaves me with half baked thoughts).

Are you using older bulbs or fixtures?
Not always and it is sometimes dificult to know. Also I have been told that the bulb makers have different 'grade' of bulb and I do wonder if lighting companies sometimes pop in theatrical bulbs??

But from a very anecdotal pov I find that sub 4k HMI's, from both Arri and Film gear frequently give me nasty green/magenta spikes that are difficult to completely gell out. I wondered if the ballests could be having an effect as when I hire briese lights (which tend to always be in good conbdition) I am less likely to have as heavy a problem. I have a few lights which I will use on small jobs or tests and was even considering adding to these by buying a couple of K5600 fixtures (the 4k and the 1.6 with some of the interesting accessories) so I can know that the fixture/ballast and bulb are in top condition.

The worst is when I have had a slightly green 1ft Led Panel mixed with a Green HMI and due to time assumed I could do a global correction later.... nasty!

kind regards (sorry for the tired ramble just fed up with colour issues)

Michael

PS I also have been interested in the PRG HS... if they can sort out the ballast to be a better shape for location work and bring out something hard with a bit more poke I'd be very interested...
