  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Full Kit Price Range

To be fair... 4:4:4, uncompressed s-log (or, at worst, 4:2:2) is not long GOP and alot of people seem to care about s35 rather than high resolution.... and, of course, availability.
We have no a delivery date for the F3, either, and there's an even vaguer schedule for the 4:4:4/S-log upgrade. Plus, who knows how much the upgrade will cost? I wouldn't be shocked if it sent the overall price to near $30K -- a lot cheaper than the F23 or F35, but certainly in the Epic range.

That said... I think RED should stick with their current road plan. Get Epic and fixed Scarlet out and the pressure is off... then move onto the 2/3" cinema and s35.

They also have to make 100% sure they can meet demand (especially accessories).

The F3 doesn't output 4:4:4. That requires both an upgrade to the camera AND a relatively expensive external recorder, a Cinedeck Extreme or a Sony HDCAM-SR. Compression depends on what format you record to.

2/3" will remain both a viable and popular format for many uses IMO. It is a great doc and live event format. Even better for light weight long lens nature shoots.

Well... the upgrade hasn't been confirmed to be hardware/firmware yet... or paid/free... and I wouldn't discount a high end 4:4:4 nanoflash in the near future, or something similar. Regardless, 4:4:2 can be intra-frame.

There comes a point when this approach ceases to be one of convenience and becomes more of a detriment to the enterprise though.

Yeah, but RED digital cinema is anything but an enterprise. Like Jim said, RED was just a fleeting thought a matter of years ago and while they've accomplished so much and left a big footprint in the history of digital cinema, they're still on the level where delivering quality products regardless of the time frame or convenience to their customers is vastly more important than volume production and accurate time tables.

RED's no Sony, yet. And with any luck they won't ever be! The way I look at it, RED is like Blizzard Entertainment. Blizzard is well known for not ever releasing a game unless they're 100% its quality and ready. And sometimes that upsets its fans to hear that a game is delayed or that a time table won't be hit. But in the end, every single one of their games hits it big and fans love it. RED's just doing that same thing. I know I'd rather wait a little longer to make sure the camera I'm investing in is good and ready, rather than get a worse camera sooner.

I'm not sure I agree with you, but I'm sure at lot of people are. S35 dof in full HD at an affordable pricerange is probably what a lot of people are seeking. However, I had a thought last night, which might be crazy I don't know? But if all cameras eventually will become S35, FF or 4/3" size, 2/3" (good looking 2/3") might become more popular due to it's large dof.

not crazy at all. i recently shot a short documentary and with the chaotic nature of the shoot a large dof was necessary. 2/3" fixed would be ideal for this scenario as i wanted a high quality cinematic finish with run and gun options.
