Okay so I have a Dragon in hand and will be rolling some tests soon. But still no rocket x is in my possession. I usually do encodes on set at full debayer to a variety of codecs such as prores in many flavors, dnxhd in many flavors, and once in a blue moon dpx.
I traditionally have done encodes in redcine, but want to move into other dragon solutions too such as resolve lite (ps what solutions do dragon color as of today?). I see that people are getting fast encodes with nMP without rocket using 1/4 or 1/2 debayer, but what are you guys getting on full debayer is what interests me? Can anyone do some extensive testing? I am going to order a rmbp and do encode tests with that, post results, return it and proceed from there with mac pros, but some still are backordered so its going to be an on going process for me to do the extensive testing I want to do. I tried getting my local apple stores to let me test like Jeff gets his to help him, no luck, so they say buy and return as needed til my hearts content.
So any of you getting fast full debayers on any apple hardware? it doesn't have to be 6k only, 5k, 4k, any kind of info is helpful...
What I think I am going to do is post a r3d file somewhere that people can access, and then we can all run the same clip through our various rigs to see what our encode speeds are? At least if some others like the idea it can make the process go faster for me... I am basically just trying to figure out for my line of work if Dragon is usable on set. I need to cycle cards, encode dailies and keep it all running smooth at the same time and lots of the gigs don't want to conform to the r3ds so getting the dailies "close enough" or "good enough" matters extensively to me so suggesting not using a full debayer unfortunately is not really a viable solution for my particular needs, it may work for some, and I don't want to turn this into a which debayer is better disagreement like that other thread...I want to stick to full debayers only, variety of codecs and bit rates/aspect ratios, and if this is manageable on set or not using various apple hardware...
If the answers look bad, PC hardware will be on the table for me too, but like I said previously i do lots of prores only stuff and am somewhat afraid of the what if situation happens using some third party prores on a PC solution... I use both PCs and Macs professionally, but personally prefer to use mac despite being a PC user most of my life until recently. again i don't want to get off on tangents, i would like to start with mac and only if deemed really impossible for my needs would i consider going PC. I am hoping the rocket X ships to me soon, but knowing many people have been waiting a long time for it, i doubt i will have mine anytime soon... So unless Dragons can be turned around on set for me, I will need to figure out another solution. thanks guys!
